If you plan on going on more 5 dayers or stepping up to the longer trips then yes. If it's a strain on your wallet then probably not needed. You can get some of the Shimano tld 30 2-speeds pretty cheap on e-bay though.

I was on the Top Gun last october for a 5 day at Lupe and brought my Avet JX...hooked up twice on large Yellow Fin Tuna and needed the low gear, fucking sharks got both of them... The two speed is the way to go. You will also want to use this reel for the monster Yellowtail at hartbreak ridge to try and keep those fuckers off the rocks.

Great boat, great crew If you don't end of buying one, the boat has plenty of Avet two speeds to let you try out.

Have fun.

if you are the type that lays the rod on the rail and winds yes, they are what you want. if you hold the rod in your hands and lift and wind then not so much unless you are fishing 50# up.

If you wanna catch the bigger tuna at the Lupe then a 2 speed is the only way to go. It is about odds. Yes, there are many who have got nice fish on single speed reels there. But when you weigh in all of the factors: scratchy at best, whitey, rocks etc, you may only get one shot at that decent fish of 75-100lbs. If and when that happens, you increase your odds of actually landing that fish.

I caught one Yellow Fin Tuna on a single speed @ Lupe (45 mins) and 5 more on a Two Speed.... (avg time 15 mins) You can do what Ya like but I wont fish a single speed @ Lupe Again... Maybe on a Paddy on the way down I might. I have to say the single speed wore my ass out lol or was it the Tuna?
The First Avet I purchased was a single speed, I now own 6 and all but one are Two Speeds......
Just my 2 cents...

Another reason I would recomend the JX6/3 is that you can cast it easily. One trip down to the Lupe it made all the difference. I was able to cast away from the boat and get bit while most guy's were soaking. There are alot of reels you can cast, but as a 2 speed it's exceptional. When you need to hammer down on a larger Yellow Fin Tuna to avoid the sharks it makes all the difference.

Take a 40# rig with low speed gears. I use a Pro Gear 545 with 5 washers and 3.25:1 gears.

Not necessary, but once you make the switch you will never go back. I argued against the need for a long time, and got my first 2spd 3 years ago. It was so unreal. I use my LX with 40# mono and 65#spectra backing to get 400yds capacity. I love it, and use both speeds a lot. I am glad I have it, even though I could get by without it.

I was faced with this same question and opted instead for a JX two speed. I like the smaller size of the JX over the LX. Just my $.02.

How did you calculate better odds of landing 'lupe Yellow Fin Tuna with a 2-speed?

I am still thinking of buying a 16VSX for 'lupe Yellow Fin Tuna. While this is empirical at best, the length of time it takes to get Yellow Fin Tuna boated does not increase odds of tax submission. In fact, I was exposed to the strategy of not hastening boating Yellow Fin Tuna so that others can feed the tax collector.

When dealing with a predator such as the infamous 'lupe tax collector, it is entirely possible that only luck will help. A great white in its natural environment and without external control will always call shots.

However, I can see logic in wrenching Yellow Fin Tuna to boat quickly for opportunity for another. On the other hand, I like the idea of a reel that's easy to cast so that bait is presented quickly. Additionally, I like the idea of 'dines not having to pull line heavier than 40lb. So I guess it might boil down to which option is most appealing to individual anglers. I certainly would not condemn anyone opting for a 2-speed; after all, it's logical to use one.

Bent poles and tight lines,

TT
