changing gears on a trinidad

does shimano make 4.5 to 1 gears to upgrade a standard trini 16 or 20 for throwing surfaceiorns . 6 to 1 just isnt slow enough for me. when i crank it in at 6 to 1 it doesnt do

Mike, just crank it slower. It's easier to slow down a retrieve than to speed it up.

I'm with you. 6:1 sucks, especially AFTER you get bit and you don't have the torque to bring him to the boat without pumping your rod and wasting time. 6:1 is for knife jigs, spoons, etc. and definitely not compatible with live bait fishing here in SoCal.

Get yourself one of the Saltists, either the STT30T or STT40, and get the 4.9:1 gears. No help for the Trinis, but those slower gears in the Daiwas are the shit for bait fishing. Not bad for fishing yoyo iron either, as that Yellow in the old Avatar was taken on a Saltist STT50 before they even came out with the high speed versions.

Pretty affordable, too, and Chark's got 'em with a $20 gift certificate.

Daiwa

Just slow your retrieve down a little and it will. Also check your irons...some never swim right from the git go no matter what speed.

I agree with the loss of power with most higher speed reals. However, Toriums and Trinidads, as well as Saltisits, and Saltigas do not have this problem. They provide plenty of cranking power even with the 6 to 1 ratio. That is one of the things that make them so popular...high speed with plenty of torque. I use bait or iron with mine all day long with no problems.

P.S. Check your Tady 45's. There are three different molds in use. One is blunt on both ends, (slow retrieve/rough weather), Pointy on front/blunt on back, (medium retrieve), pointy on both ends, (fast retrieve/calm weather). Remember fast or slow retrieve is all relative, (fast for you may not be the same as fast for me), so experiment and you will get it down. Some jigs just never swim right no matter what. Good luck.
