HUH????? What is something to look for in a reel that you want to throw iron with? High speed ratio for the return? Upwards to 6.4:1? Ive never seen or heard of Newell reels until I got on BD and they just look cheap to me. Are they really good or what? Ive never owned a two speed and was wondering. When you are burning your iron back and get a huge bite with a good fish, so you then switch it to the lower speed? I want to get an Avet reel or Accurate when I get back. Do you think a jx one speed is good enough? I have a Tiburon graphite rod at home without a reel and also a seeker rod, and am really looking forward to building up my arsenal and money really isnt too big an issue when it comes to what reel i should get. I just want the right equipment.

Ethan, Newells do look very cheap but they are the best casting reels imho. Guys like them for just that and the fact that they are ridiculous light and easy to work on. These reels have been around for a long time and have definitely been tested. If youre going to get one get a p series or a g series as the other ones are just crap. If youre leaning towards the 2 speeds, the jx is a nice reel, you basically use the low gear with the fish has got you up and down and you cannot get another turn on it in high speed, then just push the button and the low gear will allow you to crank on that bad boy

Chris, thanks for the input.. Ill look for a Newell too I guess.. I got a couple Calcuttas for light stuff, a big Shimano, I forgot the model, couple of older penns, and want to get a Saltist, Avet jx I think, and now a Newell to try it out too. Whats the deal with the p and g and what model would you suggest? I keep seeing the 338... Is that the one to get?

And if the 332 or 332 breaks down they are very easy to fix on the boat...

I have a Newell 533-5.5 that I use to throw surface plugs. I like it.

Newell, however is NOT "the only way to go." Give some serious consideration to a Saltist STT40. That's the one with the 4.9:1 gears which will move your jig through the water plenty fast. Surface iron is not always a lightning fast retreive, but you can turn the handle a little faster and speed things up. These reels are a good value, are reliable, and work well out of the box.

Nothing wrong with spectra for backing, as long as you're fishing that 150 yard topshot you won't see it unless your drag is too loose or you hook a sizeable fish. If you fish a lot it will pay for itself with the savings in mono after a few respooling jobs. Connect Uni to Uni and you're good.

The question is what rod are you putting those reels on?

I have an idea

Check your PM

BTW- I like that JX 6/3 as a jig reel on one of those " Hawaiian War Clubs"

Folks, the reference there is to the 9'3" EX Ulua that Jim loaned me to use on the last trip, that 8 day on Shogun, 4/12-20. Can you say "Wing it"

Bruce Smith was throwing iron with the same reel, 533-5.5 and using a Seeker SJ100. When he set it down Norman picked it up. Those guys are surgical when it comes to flinging a surface iron to a boil.
