spectra slippage?

has anyone encountered power pro or any brand of spectra slipping while tied dierectly to the spool? this is on smaller reels, curado 300, citica and calcutta 200. I have spectra on every reel and I cant seem to figure out my drag issue. shimano rep claims that you must put tie the spectra to a mono backing or tape otherwise slippage may occur. can anyone confirm?

Yes, you must wrap some flex tape around the spool before winding on the spectra. I have used electrical tape before and it works good also.

Sounds to me like you are not winding the spectra on TIGHT. Any flavor of spectra must be wound on the reel TIGHT, TIGHT, and then TIGHT some more. The drag issue could be that it's not tight enough and it is just digging it's way down into the rest of the spooled line? FWIW.

another affirmative. You will need to rewind your spectra on, you dont have to throw it away. Just empty the spectra from each reel onto its own empty line spool. Then from there reinstall the line properly, very tight, and lay down a few layers of tape, you can use stretchy skin tape, works well. Good luck.

Just to be sure after taping the spool I leave the tag end (after you tie to spool) laying sideways across the spool so the new line wraps over it as you load it.

I start by running a strip of electrical tape on the spool prior to adding the spectra, gives it a little bite.

wrap the line around the spool twice before tying the knot, this also helps.

It can be wound too tight...particularly on the smaller baitcasters. Not really an issue on larger reels but too tight can deform smaller spools.

My friend who works at Turners and spools my reels up is great at doing this. He will usually use 60-80 mono and do your typical line setup to the spool. After completely covering the base of the spool he will do a bimini or a tony pena/albright to the spectra and wind on the line from there. I personally don't like the duck tape or the protective tape on that goes on your finger.

I just put some wraps of mono at the bottom of my spools. Used to have that problem when I first started fishing spectra on spinning reels.
