Red Rooster III 5 Day 8/10-8/15

Just got back from the 5 day on the Red Rooster III. I saw Jeff's post but figured I'd just do this in a new thread. The trip was sponsored by Dave of WestCoastAngler.com. He gave away a bunch of tackle and comemerative tee shirts. I believe he will also be posting pictures on his site but I didn't see them up yet. It was a very light load of 25 anglers which made fishing just a little easier.

The numbers that I got for the days of fishing were:

Day 1 - 21 Yellow Fin Tuna, 3 Yellowtail
Day 2 - 53 Yellow Fin Tuna, a few Dorado also, I think
Day 3 - 171 Yellowtail, 10 Dorado
Day 4 - Some assorted rock fish, reds, ...

It was a great trip. Andy, Julio, Joe, and the rest were a great crew and really helped us get the fish in. Jorge and Fernando served some really great food in the galley. There was a very small swell and great weather. Don't know why this photo is so big??

We got to the Lupe late, around 10:00 and set up next to the Vagabond that was into a slow pic. We got one troll fish (small one, then I landed the first fish on bait which was around 45 or 50 lb. It was a slow pic all day. We did try moving but it didn't get any better. I also go good yellow tail that day.

Wish I knew how to rotate this. If anyone does please tell me. For now just put your monitor on the right side.

The next day was a little better with flurries of more fish coming by. Some truly world class tangles were had by all. We were getting fish on the kites but it was mainly soaking dines. Since they weren't coming to the boat very well, being able to cast it out a ways was essential. Julio helped us out some there. Here's some blood for you.

I ended up with 5 fish that day and the 3rd place jackpot. Andy said we were going to leave ~4:00 to go over to Benitos. Around 3:00 everyone was so tired of getting their asses kicked by 60lb tuna there was only a handfull of people on deck. Andy had to get on the horn and talk everyone back out for our las couple of hours of fishing. Around 4:30 the Royal Star came in and setup just out of range of our kites. Hope they did well also. Around 5:00 we left for Benitos. There was a handfull of smaller fish caught but they were pretty much all between 50 and 70 lbs.

3rd place Jackpot fish. 64.7 lbs.

I think we lost 7 or 8 to the sharks. We got 3 back with just the heads like this one. This one was eaten by a small shark. some of the bigger sharks only leave the gill plates and above.

Shark bite. For some reason I couldn't paste this one in.

Like Jeff said we had 1 marlin hooked at the Lupe and one at Benitos. We also got some Dorado at Benitos. I was funny fishing for the yellows in that we were all using jigs. People that had never used jigs before were using them and we all were catching fish.

Last day we fished around Geranamo island. We were trying for some calico action but it just wasn't happening. It was OK with me. I was tired and my arms were sore by then. We caught some rock fish though. Got some reds and mostly short ling cod. Lot of them were caught on the blue and white jigs.

Came back up to San Diego and stopped suddenly at 1:00am. We all got up to take a leak and found the crew had to pull out a long blue nylon rope from the port screw. It was about 3" in diameter. Tuna pen towing type stuff... This killed the port transmission and we got back on 2 engines. Hope it is covered by his insurance. That's too back for Andy. They had to turn around and go back out a few hours later on another 5 day.

Great trip, Great boat, Great crew, and a Great bunch of guys to fish with. Oh and I had tuna for dinner last night and will be having it for lunch also.

Sounds like a nice trip. You've got to love it when the arms are sore from pulling on fish! Total bummer for Andy picking up the line on the prop. Hopefully they can get it fixed really quick. My buddy who works the Holiday says they've been pulling huge bundles of that shit out of the water.

COngrats on the Carnage. I think I'm gonna have to start a payment plan to get on a trip on the Red Rooster III in about 2 years. WHat was the size of those tuna and tails? If yours was 3rd at 64, sheesh. ANyhow, good job buddy, have a good one.

Most of the tuna were 50 - 70 lbs. #1 was 73.5 caught by Dave of WestCoastAngler.com and #2 was 66 caught by Matt from Poway. The biggest tail was caught by a 12 year old boy and it was 38.something after they had gutted it. I think it was an easy 40. It was caught at Benitas. Most of the other tails were anywhere from 12 -30 but mostly in the 20-25 range.

I highly recommend the Rooster. I've always done well on it.
