First off... FANTASTIC trip guys. Great group to fish with and will do it again in a heartbeat. Here's some pics and some notes. Overall we didn't see much life other than the yellows. But we fished 7 days and hit a lot of spots. Very well planned and executed by the Capt. Still can't complain, all I want is yellows, the rest is just a bonus.
Started off the day way too early and way too excited. The RRIII is a beautiful ship.
My simple little arsenal of sticks
Some bait shots
As George spent most of the trip sleeping, we started off right by duct taping him into his room and setting off the fire alarm
Trolling ensued the next day. I was getting my shit-for-drags P332 dialed in so I dumped a nice bluefin and a nice albie (all on the El Capo rod/pig dick/11 1/2 footer)
Enjoying scotch and cigars lead to constructing a cigar jig. It got hit by a yellow, hooked a bottom fish, and swam damn well. It was left to Joe on the boat to hook a 'hoo with.
Next day we arrived at Cedros with high hopes and shitty conditions.
Mark, this is a great shot of you. I'm charging you for this shit!
We made our way down to the banks and Thetis. The fish started small and got bigger. First yellow of the trip my Torium dog gives out and slams into my hand. I grab the spool, clear the line up, and horse the bastard in. Luckily I had 3 other jigsticks...
We made it to Thetis and began the slaying. We were all hurting and soar, but somehow could not stop casting at these fish who chewed the iron with wreckless abandon. I used the SS Ulua half the time and the 11 1/2 foot Supercutta ("pig dick" or "El Capo rod") the rest of the time. The 332 finally got dialed in and worked great the rest of the trip. (Of course George had to stand on the top deck and air out his balls after a nap, while I posed for my picture.)
The fish were all long and thin. Still great looking and hard pulling though.
Corb and Uncle Mike dickin' around (the man walked up with jigs and rods twice as old as me and just worked the yellows).
The Butterfly system at its finest.
Gettin' assed on a nice second day at Thetis yellow.
PG-13 version
Corb yankin' on 'em
Get some Alec!
Mark getting angry on these fish.
Beautiful...
Jay Dawg holdin' it down with whatever jigs he had left...
Poor fish didn't even know what hit him.
Bendo and Jay trying to get through. Bill, you need to let him borrow your elbow bags.
Rolling up on the Rocks. My first time, and it won't be my last. No one was home. I'll have to wait until next time...
The coast with the most!
The "I'm gonna skip the next meal" crew.
Skiff time at Cedros.
Typical demeanor from the crew of the RRIII. They even kept Bill in check.
My 13.4# calico!
The RRIII in all her glory.
Spent the last day offshore for peanuts and more seiners.
Heading back in to my second favorite port. It was good to be back home and took all of about 3 hours before I was wishing I was back out there.
I'll let Corb tell ya'll what he did to make George throw up this face...
The ones I kept.
The gooder ones.
At the docks.
And there you have it.
Crew was great. Boat was great. Cook was great. Captain was fantastic. I'll leave it at this... he came on the speaker and goes, "Ya guys, soooo, I don't really do the whole rockfish thing, so we're gonna fish offshore on our way back, cause I just don't do the rockfish thing." BAM! Ma man!
The group of guys was great to fish with. We had some goofballs on the trip that bored their fish to gaff and didn't really know how to fish the bait properly ("bait's for bitches!), but they never reeaaaalllly did anything to piss anyone off or screw them over (of course this could have been different if we found the tuna). All in all a great group that knows how to catch fish and also knows how to take it easy and enjoy the water. It was a pleasure boys. And I will be missing it while up in Seattle. I'll see ya'll next year, and hopefully sooner. Come on up for some halibut or some skiing or to see the needle anytime.
Well, gotta go enjoy SoCal as much as I can for the next few days. Thanks again for a great trip.
