Owner Matu circle hooks, or Flyliner hooks, ring or no ring.

I’m trying to figure out which type of hooks I should bring for my 2 day trip this September. I would like to get an assortment but I can’t afford $150.00 in hooks for my younger brother and myself. Does anyone have recommendations or a favorite make or model for the fishing situation I may encounter on the trip? Thanks again in advance….

try the owner or gamakatsu ringed hooks! they have worked great 4 me.

Try cheap Mustads, because they WORK...There is no need for the expensive designer hooks, period. you will cover all your hook sizes for less than a pro pack of ringed hooks

yeah I agree. Especially in the heat of things you dont want to worry about retrieving a 2 dollar hook from a fish. Cut the line and tie another on!

go with the ringed flyliners they work great, the gorillas are real thick and you bust up the dines nose pretty bad , all we have in the tackle box is size 1, 2 1-0, and 2-0 in pro packs and one of the small packs of 3-0 hooks,

For 2-3 day trips, I use ringed owner circle hooks 1/0 and 2/0 for the dines, #1 or smaller for chovies. Since I am not local, I order them from ringedhooks.com. They ring and swivel hooks in all sizes, brands, and shapes. Not affiliated, but Guy and Annette have always treated me well.

I'm just going to toss my two cents in here. I see you're asking lots of questions, and that's good as this is your first trip. Given it's only a two day, I'd stick with bait and skip all the other stuff. I like fishing with simple J hooks for most applications. If you get into some bigger fish, you should have something for them, too, like maybe a handful of Eagle Claw 2006 6/0 circles. But for the most part I think you'll be OK with 2/0 and 4/0 Mustad 94150 and a lively bait. Ask more questions on the trip, check with the crew for help on knots and rigging up. If you don't know how to butt hook a sardine, learn on the way out to the fishing grounds. Get the crew to show you how it's done and practice with a dead bait or two. Very effective method to present your bait with a gentle underhand lob and let it run.

Good luck and stick to the basics. Leave the jigs for a longer trip when you have time to experiment a little. Fishing with bait will let you maximize your time on this trip.

Steve nailed this one...remember the most important part in hookin a good one is the bait, not a fancy hook. I'm convinced hook does not matter for anything in the short range fishing, so i stopped wasting my money on them, and yes they were a waste

Mustad 94150, learn to tie a loop knot. No rings necessary. Just don't swing, the hook will stay in the corner almost every time.

Hey David,
Question on the Loop knot, do you have a favorite, perfection loop or SD jam backed off? My friends and I fish the East Cape a lot and the deckhands down there love the perfection loop. I've used this as well on some of my trolling jigs and have not broken off yet on marlin and ahi. What would be the lowest pound line class would you use the perfection loop with? Thanks as always for your great info.

94150 gets my vote too. Most important thing is picking the right bait, and getting out in the zone with a minimum of fuss.
