I bought out Joeys last stock at Squidco the other day and was laughing out the door b/c of the great deal I got on the CS650's. Simple simple reels that are just bulletproof!

Hey Alan. What is your take on the limits of this reel. More specificaly, I am looking for a reel about the size of a Newell 332 or 338 with the ability to load with spectra and long top shots of 40 or 50lb to put on a 90j for surface iron.

The Wahoo and Albacore Specials have the same internal layouts. They use the same drags, but the gears differ. The 280's have 6:1's and the 540 and Wahoo Special have 5:1's. The 6:1's won't fit in the other reels because the 280's gear box is bigger. If you look at Alan's pics of the internals of the 280, you can see the 6:1 gears. You can also see how there are "fingers" that bridge the gap between the edge of the gear and the edge of the drag washers. The 5:1 gears don't have this gap. For some reason, the Wahoo Special came with Smoothie type drags, while the Albacores came with carbon fiber type drags.
