I have met Bill on a handfull of occasions and he has always been friendly and polite.
He was a true ambassador to the sport and one of the most influential men in sportfishing through his pioneering spirit and willingness to challenge the unknown. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the people he influenced throughout his life.

Very sad to read of the passing of Bill Poole. He was respected by everyone that knew him, and in return he respected everyone he met. Great Man. Say hi to Rollo for me.

RIP Bill.....................all the words about this man have been said in this thread, but worth repeating:
1.) Icon
2.) Pioneer
3.) Godfather
4.) Legend
........and they can go on forever. Here's how I met the man.
It was back in '97 or '98, ( I know, I know, I'm old) at the Fred Hall show (back when there were still great deals to be had), with my hands full of tackle. Walked by his booth for the Excel, (back when Pat was still Captain and his brother was 2nd mate). I was with my partner designated driver Dave. We started looking at his brochure and drooling over his boat. He asked us if we wanted to sign up for a trip. I told him that I had never went on a trip longer than 3 days and only had 20 dollars left from buying all this tackle at the show. He smiled and said give me your 20 dollars and pay me what ever I can each month till it was payed for. This was my first 5 day trip. It was a trip of a life time for me up to that date. We caught 60 to 80 pound bluefin for 3 solid days. I'll never forget that 1st time meeting him and that fishing trip that help move me to the next level in my fishing game.
Prayers to Mr. Pooles family and friends.

curtis that reminds me of the first time i met Bill.
I was about 7 years old, the Excel had just been splashed (in fact it was still the Qualifier Excel) and my dad was looking for a 3 day trip on one of the smaller boats for us both to go on. Bill spotted us from across the tackle shop and asked us what kind of trip we were interested it, we mentioned a 3 day and he asked us if we ever thought about a 7 day trip instead. My dad, kind of embarrassed, mentioned we could only afford a 3 day at the most, to which Bill replied "tell you what, you pay your ticket and the kid can go for free" I spent 7 of the most memorable days of my life on that boat with my father, all due to the kindness of Mr. Poole. that was my first long range trip, but far from my last, and i have memories of my father who is now passed that i will remember forever.
I cannot think of a nicer thing for someone to do for two complete strangers. Bill was a class act and will be remembered fondly.
