I think it's damn good TV.
And if it helps the cause of limiting illegal harvesting of these whales all the better. The footage of them dragging up these huge creatures all bloody is sickening to me.
There are legal quotas for whaling, but what these Japanese are doing is illegal which is why they are targeting them. The whaling boats have "RESEARCH" painted on them - what a sham.
The Japanese have a long tradition of ignoring laws and quotas in search of their way of life (and profit) which is highly dependent on the sea. When they are in their territory it's one thing - but when in International waters, they should play by the rules and they don't.
And don't tell me they are exploiting a "loophole". They are illegally harvesting whales for commercial purposes. If you think it's OK, then you are against Game Wardens and conservation.
The Captain made an interesting point that when in East Africa they would shoot poachers on the spot. I know a game ranger in South Africa who was a former poacher and he said if you got caught, they would break your teeth on the spot.
So why would anyone think it's OK to let the Japanese poach - because it's harder to stop them?
No one else is out there trying to bring any negative publicity to them so I say the crew of the Steve Irwin is doing good - their tactics are dangerous for both sides - a storm comes up and flips that whaling boat because it's props are fouled and then you really have some trouble on your hands.
Reasonable measures won't do any good.
Like I said though, I think it's damn good TV.
And by the way, these folks have ZERO affiliation with PETA so far as I can tell.
