Thanks word-doc. The sleeve really fit tight, I was surprised at that. I would like better adjustments though, Alan do you still have them?

Chances are the spacing sleeve that fits just under the star needs to be shorter, or the drags were not all the way seated into the main gear, if the metal washer with the tabs on it doesn't stay seated in the gear you won't get drag pressure and the star adjustment won't be much, it may also make some noise when you turn the handle, if the drags are ok you may just need to grind the spacing sleeve (9-60) down some till you get more adjustment, you should have very little to no drag when the star is backed all the way out, the handle will have no effect on the adjustment as it sits on top of a notch in the gear sleeve. Be sure that the spacing sleeve is moving freely over the gear sleeve, there should be no binding. If you can't get the stainless sleeve from Alan, the fine thread gear sleeve from penn is 98-505 and you need the star 10-505, Dave Mount in one of the above threads carries these ( pmount1356@aol.com ).

there is also a wave washer that you can omit if the star will not travel enough. try to visualize how things work and i'm sure you will figure it out. you're doing great so far! alan

Thanks all. All good tips, considering the way the washers were trashed they may be why the star has such a limited turn as I was so excited to get it apart without dropping anything I did not pay that much attention but seem to recall they were not flush with the edge of the gear. The star is a 10-60 btw. I kinda think the washers condition was the problem and they were not properly seated, will see how the new ones do, they may actually fit. If not I may just set the drag around 7-8 pounds and live with it.
I think the noise is as alan said (imagine that?). I will investigate that when it is tight and back together to see if there is a change.
I just checked the handle, it is a 24-66, not stock by the parts list I printed off. I dont know the difference this would make. Thanks again, ben

Thanks again, ben | The 24-66 handle is the stock handle for the jigmaster, and would have no restriction on the star adjustment unless the handle is bent and not allowing the star to back all the way up, and like Alan said a tweeked frame can cuase the spool to rub, alot of reel stands I've seen get bent and can cuase the problem, a Newell reel base is a good choice if your stand needs replacing, they are lighter and allow the use of longer screws which helps with strength and allingment.

Ok thanks, the drag kit is on its way. Once I get it back together I will know more. I suspect the new washers may help the spacing problem. Think I will try to smooth it up rather then new stuff if I can.
The Penn parts list I printed off shows 24-155 as part number for the handle which is why I thought it was not stock.

Ok, thanks. Someone replaced the right side plate with a 501 but kept the original handle (and spool) it appears. I did print off the 501 parts list. Joys of ebay. I bought it to learn with and already learned a lot without putting line on it. thanks again ben
