Good samaritan or moron?

OK, I don't want to take a good intention wrong, but also there is a time that "do gooders" need to stay within their limits and mind their own business.....

Here is the story (rant)... tell me if I am wrong....

Went hali fishing Friday.... had a great day..... went and pulled my crab pots.... 6 keepers for four pots (Horrible)...... Headed to Depoe Bay, where I have hundreds of bar crossings, and been fishing out of for 10+ years with 4 different boats....

Aproaching the hole when I hear over the radio, "21 foot striper inbound Depoe Bay" I look around because I see no boats close to me and I see the closest boat is between the first and second bouy (maybe a couple of hundred yards from the closest bouy). I think this guy needs to twit till he is a little closer before he announces. I then announce G-spot inbound Depoe bay and cross the bar.

Now I hear the same voice say "23 foot Edwing inbound Depoe Bay" I ask the guy is your boat magic a few minutes ago you were a 21 foot striper.... He proceeds to tell me that they were worried about a 21' Striper approaching the hole and not announcing their approach....

Now I am thinking that a guy a 1/2 mile back thinks he can have any depth perception and improperly anounce my 23' Grady as a 21' Striper is a moron "do-gooder" who has overstepped his bounds....

MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!! Maybe I'm wrong, but it hit me a little funny. The boat had a name "Slabhunter" on the side of it... if you know this guy let him know his limits.

Additionally, if your boat has a name, maybe you should announce "Slabhunter inbound Depoe bay" And if you are close enough to actually see and have depth perception and want to be a help some poor boater who is not as great as you announce "sport boat inbound Depoe" don't guess at size and maker if you don't know?

It's a whole lot to do about nothing, but it was also stupid that this guy thought he needed to announce my arrival from 1/2 mile back.

Depoe Bay is the smallest natural harbor in the world. It is customary to announce on the part channel (80) your arrival and departure into the hole because the hole is to small to accomodate two boats crossing.

It is the responsibility of me as the captain to take care of my boat, not some yahoo 1/2 mile back with no depth perception "worried about" me not announcing my entry....

That's the process.... like I said not a huge deal.... just caught me that his guy thinks he can see that good from a 1/2 mile back....

Saturday I was lining up to come back in the hole, listening on the radio, listening for a horn, all clear. I anounce my intentions to enter and out comes a boat. Normally that would piss me off but I have come to expect it. I'm not going to question what piss's you off, to each his own. I've seen Slabhunters boat at enough ports that someday you will be able to tell him face to face.

In my book I call him a well meaning skipper that I wouldn't mind fishing with or around.

Cool.. that is what I was searching for is an honest opinion..... I never felt his intentions were bad.... it just seemed over zealous from 1/2 mile back... silly in my opinion... but definitely trying to help....

Probably nice guy with good intentions.

Slightly over zelous perhaps.

"where I have hundreds of bar crossings, and been fishing out of for 10+ years with 4 different boats...."

Not everbody has your experience and or skill level

Just say thanks for the effort and move on.

Get any nice butts?

Nothing nice, but we did get em..... small. Friday was nice, but Saturday was rough, we got two by 9:30 and called it quits.... Once again they were small.....

That's good.....

Maybe I'll name my next boat peckerwood.... or wooden pecker!!

I am sure he meant well... I guess when it comes down to it I would rather error on the side of safety, it just caught me off guard based ont eh the circumstances...

Curious, so he got the boat wrong what was the down side to his actions? Just asking.

Glad someone got their fish. Nice job.

It wasn't that he got the boat wrong.... It was that from a half mile back he thought he had good enough depth perception to call out for someone else.

Imagine if you were 1/2 mile behind someone looking towards the shore/hole and trying to guess how close that person was to the shore/hole....

It is tough to determine how close someone is.... he then took it another step to get worried that I might not announce myself and announced for me..... Then he announced a wrong boat..... if his sight is so good that he needs to announce for me he should have been able to determine what kind of bout it was.....

Anyone listening to the radio would have been looking for a 21' striper to come in and one would never come.....

Like I said he meant well... never thought he didn't....

I think some people get a little over zealous with the "Oh my God! this guy isn't going to announce, I better do it for him"

In my opinion the guy had no business announcing for someone else based upon the circumstances.... he wasn't even to the bouy yet....

If he was actually close enough to see that someone was entering the hole, he could then offer some quick radio snnouncement that a "sportboat" was entering Depoe bay and had not announced..... at least then people would not be looking for a boat that doesn't exist....

I think if any of you were in your boats and the circumstances went down like they did you might be bothered. Especially those of you with plenty of experience on the salt..... You know how to run your boat, and what you are doing..... you know how to cross a bar, and use your radio. You take pride inyour ability to catch fish and have a good time and then.... someone acts like you have done something wrong, and corrects the problem for you when there was never a problem.....

Not a big deal, but yet I didn't really think his help was inappropriate...

Please dont misunderstand... help is appropriate when needed and all my experience may not stop me from needing help someday...... but I don't think this that this guy 1/2 mile behind me needed to help me out because I did something wrong by waiting to long to announce my arrival... he actually caused a problem for me, because when he anounced a 21' Striper inbound I instantly started looking around for this Striper that didn't exist....
