Curious, so he got the boat wrong what was the down side to his actions? Just asking.

Glad someone got their fish. Nice job.

It wasn't that he got the boat wrong.... It was that from a half mile back he thought he had good enough depth perception to call out for someone else.

Imagine if you were 1/2 mile behind someone looking towards the shore/hole and trying to guess how close that person was to the shore/hole....

It is tough to determine how close someone is.... he then took it another step to get worried that I might not announce myself and announced for me..... Then he announced a wrong boat..... if his sight is so good that he needs to announce for me he should have been able to determine what kind of bout it was.....

Anyone listening to the radio would have been looking for a 21' striper to come in and one would never come.....

Like I said he meant well... never thought he didn't....

I think some people get a little over zealous with the "Oh my God! this guy isn't going to announce, I better do it for him"

In my opinion the guy had no business announcing for someone else based upon the circumstances.... he wasn't even to the bouy yet....

If he was actually close enough to see that someone was entering the hole, he could then offer some quick radio snnouncement that a "sportboat" was entering Depoe bay and had not announced..... at least then people would not be looking for a boat that doesn't exist....

I think if any of you were in your boats and the circumstances went down like they did you might be bothered. Especially those of you with plenty of experience on the salt..... You know how to run your boat, and what you are doing..... you know how to cross a bar, and use your radio. You take pride inyour ability to catch fish and have a good time and then.... someone acts like you have done something wrong, and corrects the problem for you when there was never a problem.....

Not a big deal, but yet I didn't really think his help was inappropriate...

Please dont misunderstand... help is appropriate when needed and all my experience may not stop me from needing help someday...... but I don't think this that this guy 1/2 mile behind me needed to help me out because I did something wrong by waiting to long to announce my arrival... he actually caused a problem for me, because when he anounced a 21' Striper inbound I instantly started looking around for this Striper that didn't exist....

Slabhunter is a good guy and good fisherman. Probably ticked you off because

1. called you a striper

2. made you out to be shorter than you actually were

Might as well called ya smurf.

Gotta remember not everyone has heard the courtesy rules there at dopey bay. Slab was just looking out for ya. No harm no foul.

BTW Nice striper.

I agree. I almost made a fatal mistake one. I called my wife Ingrid. She looked and said, "that was your first wife."

I think the fella simply called out a wrong boat model. You'll see him at a marina somewhere this year. Just talk it over.

Not a "Moron" but out of line. His call might be due to a past run in at the hole with a real moron that caused him to jump in. I don't use Depoe much but I've had a few "surprises" half way through with people that don't know or don't care about the drill, one being a charter boat.

I would much rather have someone on the water that is making an error on the side of caution and safety than meet a fool running the "hole in the wall" without a radio. I have followed many boats through the hole that never made the call, so I announced two boats.

Guess the unanswered question that has not be discussed is, how far out should a boat be from the "hole in the wall" when they make the call??? I tend to get very close and only make the call just before I commit.. Others may make the call from further out.

I have had too many close calls while in the middle of the hole. Usually it is with small boats without radios. I did back down a charter one time that did not make the call. The captain was gracious about it..

Slabhunter can call my boat whatever he wants if he thinks it will save me from a boating accident.

Let it go.....

You got me Bernie..... LOA 25'4" beam 9'3" I don't even resemble a 21' Striper..... how could he...... maybe if he was close enough to worry about me he would have noticed?
