| Winchester Bay
Oregonians,
Is there a good Salmon fishery in the Winchester Bay area?
I'm from Washington and will be heading down to Winchester Bay near Reedsport to do some crabbing this weekend and am debating what boat to bring. If it's just crab, I'll bring my Zodiac which is easy to launch from the beach. If there is a chance for Salmon fishing, I can borrow a bayrunner and do a little trolling and mooching.
Tight lines,
Cisco

Chinook/silver salmon season is in full swing in the Reedsport/Salmon Harbor area. If the ocean allows and CG does not ask you to move off the bar you might want to fish the incoming tide. Run a plug cut herring to the bottom w/o flashers with 8ozs of weight... Once you get there,,, there will be no question in your mind where to fish, think south side. Enjoy.
Crabbing has been so so lately.
Be prepared to release a ton of native silvers.

Talked to the Salmon fishermen working the Jaws yesterday, all natives, no keepers for the few we talked to, inside the Bay might be your best bet for keepers now, some good reports of Crab inside the Bay yesterday.
Good Luck!

There is but you might want to pack your own rock to stand on. I have never seen so many fisherman using that area in past years. I would like to see a net fly there, that could be exciting..

Heres my report.
First off Winchester bay is a really neet area to fish. Too bad it's an 8 hour trek from Seattle. I'd like to spend more time there and learn the fishery better.
Fished Friday evening on incoming tide between old CG pier and RV jetty. Trolled a coho killer behind a flasher and a cop car behind a flasher. Works in Puget sound but didn't get any hits in the bay. Caught 2 crab. Left pots to soak.
Saturday morning, pulled 3 decent crab from overnight soak. Fished the incoming tide between old CG pier and RV jetty with coho killer, hooked up a shaker in front of the harbor entrance. Went in for lunch and came back out with the wife and trolled around the slack tide between CG pier and bar condition sign. Still no hookups. Saw a few guys on the jettys land some fish but not in boats. Pulled another crab and called it a day. Left the pots to soak.
Sunday pulled pots and got 3 more crab. Didn't fish.

After the local told you to use a cutplug you did not even try one??
With the action you had--day two I would have had some hearing in the water.
When in rome--do as the romans do!!
I learned this up in Bamfield,BC. I tried everything I had--then tried what they were doing and----FISH ON!!
Better luck next time.

We were pretty much screwing around on this one. My wife and I were mixing it up in our 10' zodiac so it couldn't get too serious. I was happy to be on the water with a couple cold beers dragging lines behind the boat.
The rough bar sign was flashing and coast gaurd asked if I was thinking of crossing. Chuckle, not a chance in hell.
Hopefully see ya on water next season wHacking da tunas |
