| Tom,
The explosive growth of the "guided sportfishing" industry in SE Alaska in the mid '90's is what's driving the "charter boat hate", greed is driving the theft of our resource by comfish.
When I left KTN there were over 350 charter boats fishing out of the area and many resident in SE feel the same way as comfish about the massive charter fleet in SE.
Comfish will take "their" 100% (or more) of the quota if we allow them to. Comfish owns the PFMC. Slade Gorden sucks....FUCK THE GORDAN FISHERMAN!!!!!!

Lee
I havn't seen that name mentioned in a long time. King County took care of him years ago.
Guess it's like anything else, if the market supports that many boats and comfish gets 80% of the quota from the commercial guys running the IPHC, and is fighting for more, and our measly catch area 2A, thats far from an equitable share plan.
Last time I looked, charterboats and guide boats need sportsfisherman to make a wage. No doubt there may be a abundance of guides up there, but it's more of a allocation fight between different interests rather than a charter/guide vs sportsfisherman type of deal. And here we are arguing over fucking the C.R. halibut quota from 17,000lbs down 75% to almost no quota period, all the time the comfish guys are getting more up North.

Tom, I agree that it is an allocation issue and Sportfish (both guided and unguided) always get the short end of the deal when dealing with Comfish. Your "clients" are and the guided sportfishing industry provides a much needed service to them. All need to wake up and get involved or we will loose what littie Comfish leaves us and the resource is destroyed by their greed. I have friends in Comfish as well as the charter industry and I'm a sportfisherman. I try to see all sides and do what's best for the resource and our ability to harvest it on a sustainable basis. Too often greed by one user group or another, usually Comfish but not always, causes problems for all and threatens the long term health of the resource. The fisheries division of the ADF&G was in Comfish’s pocket when I was in SE....probably still are. |

Keta,
Tuned into this one because of the word "halibut". Myself and Matt Goldsworthy have a book on both the Pacific and the California halibut (way different fish) just about complete and I'd like to send you a copy for review and your always welcome commentary and editing. Was gonna send you a PM, but since I'm already here, figured I'd just do it this way. Probably send to you tomorrow, Mr. Sharp Eye and Tongue.

| Thanks Fred, I'll be looking for it!!! Randy, During the late 80's and the mid 90's the guided sportfishing industry experienced explosive growth, over 375 boats in the Ketchikan area alone. It went from where we could harvest halibut out of my 16' skiff 3-5 miles from my home to where we had to run 45 or more miles to catch quality fish. Places where two to five boats could fish without interfering with each other became freeways WITH GRIDLOCK and morons running charter boats against the flow, taking the inside cut on both passes and generally being assholes. It was not all of them by far but enough were assholes that the "locals" were pushed out to leave room for the tourists. The "industry" started lobbying the Alaska Board of fish for more of "THEIR quota" for themselves and their clients and fuck the rest of us (just like Comfish is doing now). A few of them even thought that "locals" should give up fishing so the tourists could have the fish. This brought on a real hate for charter operations in SE. Many residents of SE Alaska are both sport and commercial fishermen. Now don't miss read this and get your panties in a wad, there are real reasons for Alaskans to dislike the guided sportfishing industry, as well as the tourist industry in general, for the harm they have done to those that chose to live in SE. Can Comfish, guided sportfishing and sportfishing coxist? I think so but both of the commercial opperations need to set aside their greed, quit screwing us and destroying the resource! Do I like or agree with the bumper sticker? Well I don't like it but I tend to at least sympathize with the message. There should have been some restrictions on the growth of the industry and more control of the process of issuing 50 ton licenses. I know of at least two “guides” that worked full time and didn’t fish (more like couldn’t as they were idiots) that lied about the required hours when they took the 50T test. The new requirements for 50T licns. would have weeded out many of them. |

Looks like the CR folks get Thurs, Fri, Sat only. That blows. Not sure it will be worth the effort to take the boat down for butts this season. Wish they would have left Sunday in the mix of things. At least on the weekends you get maybe one or two shots at it before the charters blow through the quota. (sorry Tom). Just pissing in the wind here.
