| Marlin Report: 14 to Avalon to Slide
Started off working hard to make macs outside Newport, ended up getting 20 nice pieces. We headed for the hard edge between the 14 and the Avalon hoping we might run across some swords. Found a lot of trashy kelp lines with good amounts of bait but no predators other than a couple whales.
Worked over to the slide and found a lot of life 2 to 3 miles straight off the quarry, bonito/terns/seals/porpoise looked very fishy. Pounded that area to 5 miles for zero bites or sightings.
About 10am one of the King Harbor marlin guys gets a fish 4 miles off the east end around the 125, on a black/purple non beeper model, said the fish went 140, nice release.
So we headed that way and found more terns and life but no action for us. It felt almost like August marlin fishing, we had a nice crowd of the usual suspects, Wild Bill, Donna C, Bill Joy, Mil-So-Mar, etc. But unfortunately it's not August in the number of fish present.
Right on the tide change and about a 1/2 mile in front of me I got to watch the Wild Bill show one more time as they came up on a single tailer and went through their routine like the pros they are and released the fish in 10 min. This fish was right on the corner of the 100 fathom 4 1/2 miles off the east end.
Other than the 2 marlin caught, their were a few jumpers seen and a quick feeder or two.
A spotter plane reported seeing 3 fish in and around the 14 mile bank, we also saw the sword boat in the area nail at least 3 fish off the southwest corner of the 14.
Water conditions: Clean to dirty green water, 70-76 degrees, wind was switching around with the eddy from the outer water blow.
Nice day on the water
