We wraped up the installation of our pilot house Friday night at 9:30 pm and we're off to the coral. finally get to test our new pilot house and we knock one out of the park. First time out with the new Pilot house and it was victory at sea, white caps at 5am and all day ducking diving waves at the rail but the pilot house made it all possible. We decided to go look for exotics and launched about 3am after dealing with a minor issue. Bait barge waiting right outside the harbor made nice for - mini-sardines for bait. About 5 am Ron is doing something at the rail and a wave breaks over the side and totally works him...hahahaha My brother spots the first micro patty and we troll past it for nothing. Since we were off to a slow start we decided to do one a with bait. I get the first bait in the water and it just gets slammed. Ron gets bit...Fresh ONe!! lupe rushes for a bait rod and he gets bit too. I get mine up first a rat Yellowtail-release- Ron pulls up a Dodo then Lupe pulls up a dodo by this time I'm one again and I get a dodo. we make another pass and the dorados are going nutz jumping everywhere just for sport, on this pass Ron and I hook and land toad Yellowtail's. We troll for a while till we spot the next patty and we troll passed it and the starboard pole gets Hammered. Rich is on this one and he gets taken around the boat and straight into the fish hold another toad Tail on a mex flag feather. Did a pass with bait for nothing. Get moving and to the next patty and we get into some more Tails, I get bit off, my bro is on again...this time it would turn out to be a Yellow Fin Tuna. We make another pass and Ron...ron is on again for one more toad Yellowtail. The conditions were bad and we where 50 miles out so at 1:30 we start the run in. Lupe is cleaning the deck and duckdiveing a wave or two when possible. About ten miles into the run we come across braking dolphin and Yellow Fin Tuna jumpers mixed in. In go Lime green Yozuri's and 100 yards later the port troller gets hammered, this thing was smoking line off the reel. We start the ten count to load up the other trollers and BAM the Starboard trollers gets bit. At this point we're doing the tuna drill slowing the boat, throwing bait and looking for a bait rod. I look at rich and 3/4's of the spool is gone! I grab the other troller and line is melting off the spool. I'm yelling at Ron to get the boat in gear to chase Rich's fish because he down to the Knot and then this huge MARLIN clears air as it goes air borne!!!!YEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!! Thats your fish Rich!!!! a few moments Later My fish jumps and I got one On tooo!!!! Doubles on Marlin on 30# sticks! we're chasing Richs fish and mine is following it then richs fish pops off and my fish goes nutz-. charging straight at the boat and then underneath so I'm hanging over board up to my elbows holding the pole underwater to get around the bottom and from a distance I hear someone "Mark Watch OUt!!!" I took a head shot from a wave breaking on me. Drenched from head to toe...Yeeeehaaaw! - I endured 15 minutes of punishment...I wish I could say we landed either of the two stripers...but it was only a matter of time with our outfits. Rich's had a big one in the 180# class and mine was about 120#. what an Insane way to top off the Day. we have some pics of the tails and maybe one of a Dodo...will post later.. We released the dodos as we like to keep the bigger models. Mark
the worst part of the day was watching the commercial fleet setting nets. I think every siener in baja was there.
Mark can't believe you were trolling with such light line, what a bummer. Great job on all the fish you caught. What a thrill to have a double hook up on Carp. Yikes!!!!!!!
Hey SS- conditions limited our digital exposures and I forgot my camera phone.

Ironic isn't it???? we had set ups for the marlin but we were running back to the coral when we seeing jumping Yellow Fin Tuna so we decided to put yozuri's in so we tied 2 on bait rods. these fish beat up our tackle and expose our weakest link. lesson learned!

it was just spur the moment, the elphant guns were locked and loaded.. it was insane!! I'm hooked on pursuing these guys. STRONG FAST. It would burn line then we would chase it then it would dart back at me and it was like reel faster!!!. I felt like I respooled 15 reels in 15 minutes.

Yeah Mark,
That makes lots of sense.
I know how that is! I got a half dozen zuri's on the boat, none of them have leaders attatched so rather than cut the swivels off of the main trollers, we would have quick tied and done the same thing you guys did! Only difference is I got a couple 40 bait sticks and one 50 on board (no leaders mind you) might have had a chance in similar conditions! I've caught lots of marlin on 30 # (live bait) but always had about 10 foot of minimum 125# leader.

we had a couple of 50# poles but never gave it a second thought since it was these two exact set ups that we got BET on last season and we traditionally go with light line for swim traps and rapalas/yozuri's.....oh well, seeing we lost those candie bar yozuri's we'll be making a stop to get more and definately will rig up leaders ready to use on the go. we're talking about getting out riggers. I can only hope that next time we're ready for it. Wow! I might be able to reply to a post but I'm still there....what an experience. " Go!GO!GOGOGOGO!!!!!LEFT straight right!!!! gogogogogogo Stop gunn IT!!!!!! "
