Be carefull guys. Ironwood May you catch many TUNA'S in the afterworld.
This morning, we lost a good friend, generous soul, tireless man, amazing fisherman and dedicated father, Marty McMillain, fishing out of Montauk's West Lake Marina... I was blessed to have had the opportunity to know him for almost 30 years and to have fished with him many times in the surf and with him and his son Cody both inshore and offshore on their boat XIA MU JI.
Marty was an outstanding and well experienced fisherman and captain...not a typical weekend warrior. He contributed to many discussions here. Many know him for his custom aluminum battlewagon and his username 'Ironwoodtuna'.
Marty was originally a striped bass surf fishing fanatic; fishing Montauk in a wet suit back in the 70's, running the Cape Cod beaches and being a part of the great run of bass in Block Island in the 80's... There is much info on several forums showing his exploits and his specialty built beach buggies.
He loved fishing for striped bass and moved on to chasing them by boat, spending many years fishing the Montauk rips, the Gut and Block Island waters in search of cows.
In more recent years he added offshore fishing for tuna, shark, swords and marling along with his inshore striped bass endeavors... He was prepared for everything and did it all to the extreme when it came to sport fishing. He logged countless hours, sleepless nights, followed weather patterns and relayed constant reports to and from fishing friends and colleagues for many years. He was always happy to share his experiences, provide up to the minute reports in the hopes that he could help the next guy get into fish...
Thru his years fishing, Marty's fishing partner and first mate has always been his now 16 year old son Cody. Cody was unfortunately on the boat when they got tied up in lines today and resulted in the loss of his dad. Cody helped his dad set up a website to share their offshore fishing experiences with all...
Home - XIAO MU JI
Marty touched the lives of many, as I am reminded not just thru conversations with our fishing friends, but by my own 16 year old son and fishing partner, Nicholas, who looked up to Marty and always looked forward to our next fishing trip with Marty and Cody... Today, Nicholas was holding tight to his 'XIA MU JI' hat in memory of our good friend.
Our prayers continue to go out to Cody and his family... rest in peace Marty.
We will sorely miss you, but you left a footprint that will not disappear...
