Very sad story and my heart goes out to Cody and his family and freinds. I enjoyed reading Marty's posts and watching his videos. I think it is testament to Marty that he properly trained Cody for emergency situations and how collected Cody seemed to be while making several attempts to save his father. His father clearly spent alot of quality time with his son and it shows.

Cory,

I wish you and your family strength. Your story brings great sadness to me. I can't imagine your pain.

Your father sounded like a great person and a world class dad.

I am utterly blown away by this terrible news. My Internet connection has been down for a week or I would have responded sooner. Marty and Cody through him was much more than an Internet presence for me. I knew Marty well and respected him mightily. He was a unique, very special, good man, a rare combination. He was constantly on the leading edge of fishing too, something that I truly admired. And man, he was the hardest of the hardcore.

An example of what Marty was really like was a video he sent me of an annual deer hunt he made with his wooden bow and the arrows that he made. It was out in some God-foresaken wild place, not one of those game farms that he could have afforded and that so many of the TV shooters "hunt". That never would have done for a man like Marty. It was fair chase with the odds against him all the way. The greatest statement about Mary McMillan the man was that he didn't kill a deer on that trip. I'm not even sure that he took a shot. It was all about the experience, the beauty and intelligence of the big bucks he was hunting and the stark granduer of that moonscape he was hunting. No kill shot. No buck. No nothing but a great respect for the animals and the place.

That was the Marty McMillan that I knew. I shall miss him greatly.

Cody, you dad is mentioned in several of my books, most recently one of the newest ones. I will send you a copy of that book after a bit of time passes and you have had some time to hopefully begin the healing process. As you do that, remember that your dad was a splendid man and that his presence in your heart and soul can never be taken from you.

Take his spirit fishing with you as often as you can...you know he would have wanted that.

My deepest and most sincere condolences.

Captain Fred Archer
