HUGE meter marks, but only 1 YFT

Just a quick report fellas. I Ho'ed on hzr12's boat today. We worked west of north island all day. All the paddies we stopped on (6 or so) were all dry. Including one that was the size of a garage door and had birds on it. We ended up finding the mammals and chased them all day. The mammals had thick meter marks from 30-100 '. We tried everything from trolling enerything we had, to flylining deans, to chunking. All this to no avail. Eventually our pod met up with about 2-3 other pods and formed a huge pod of woking mammals. The meter marks were unbelievable. At in one point the whole damn sonar screen was comletely full of red and green meter marks. I mean full! Never seen anything like it before ....ever. We worked these things for hours and hours, but for some reason the tunies would not play. eventually the huge pod broke up (after hours) and we chose to follow a pod that had very good marks under it. We tried and tried and eventually got a knock down on a zucchini feather. Very nice grade of fish 35-40#. After we sunk the gaff we had lost our pod. We found them again, but they kept sinking out. It didnt matter how far we would swing in front of them. All in all w didnt get the skunk, but you would think that with the massive meter marks we could have plugged the boat. Oh well. The Yellow Fin Tuna are still here, but good luck getting them to play.
Thats all I have fellas hope someone finds it useful.

That is a good sign that one hit a feather...I am tired of the run and gun stuff...I love mindless trolling for hours on end with a quick rush every now and then. At least the Yellow Fin Tuna are big this year...more than five would be way too much meat for me. Congrats on the fish!!!

Ian, we had the same experience last time we were out in that same area... nice meter marks, but just could not make anything happen. Tried everything just like you guys. We finally hooked up, but a blind jig strike on a free swimming cow dodo of all things. Like you said, they're out there, it's just getting them to go. If anybody figures it out, I'd love to know how you did it.

Thanks for inviting me out Hector. Even though we didn't kill 'em we still came away with something and I had a great time out on the water. Like I was saying all day...I could of been at work. I was suppossed to be at work. Thank god my boss likes me and told me to go fish! As we all know, a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work! And yesterday wasnt bad. Good times!

Ha ha. Too funny. Good times out there with you guys. If you make it out there to Oahu talk to Capt. Shannon (LIVBE BAIT) for sure. He will put you on the fish.

Sounds like our day, hope the tuna stay another month or so. Glad you avoided the skunk.

Very true. We split the tuna between 4 of us. Needless to say my share was devoured last night in the form of sashimi and seared ahi in terriaki ginger sauce. All gone! Trying to get out maybe once more on Friday if anybody has room for one more. I have a taste for fresh ahi....I cant help it.
