7/27/07 - 9 / 302 / 371 YT & Damn Finicky Dodos offshore christening of the new ride

Took the day off and convinced ScottR to do the same. I owed him big for helping fix my old rig for sale, so this was a free trip for him. Still breaking in the new ride and had only fished La Jolla on it so far..and i was itching for some offshore action. Still don't have the electronics in (they go in next week) so had to relie on the hand held GPS and VHF. No temp readings, no meter. Left the slip in SD Bay at 5:30 and got a nice scoop of mixed deans/chovie.
Headed out to the 302 into a NW windswell which made it tough to run fast. Signs of life at the 9 but no paddies so we kept going. Dropped the trollers in a few miles shy of the 302. Saw porpoise doing the right thing with a boat already working them. Pulled the feathers infront of them for a bit before they sunk out and changed direction. Saw a boat soaking on them too.
Headed west of the 302 and came across the first nice paddy of the morning. Did a few drift on it for nada...decided to slow troll and first time around Scott hooks up and lands a very respectable Tail...about 36". High fives and another pass...second pass on the slow trolled deans...ScottR again...another very very nice Tail....3rd pass on the slow troll, finally my turn. Land another 36" tail on the slow trolled dean. stoked to bloody the new deck! Fished the paddy hard for another hour for no more love.
Head off with trollers out and hit another nice paddy...fished a few more paddies hard with no love. 4th paddy we slow troll around and are about to leave...bait is out as we drift by and consider next move...DORADO out of the water, lands on my bait and MISSES!! HOLY SHIT. We run back up to the paddy and chum...dorado erupt all over...pushing micro bait..for the next hour this nice dodo school teased us...boiling up on bait but wouldnt touch any of our offerings...if i only had a speargun. Super frustrating to see them boil but not hit your dean or chovie...nice grade of dodo too...
Hit a few more paddies for no love but did see tails on two of them but couldnt get them to go. Back in the barn by 4:30 and ran 28mph in with the swell. never saw any breezing fish or got any knockdowns on the troll and only one seiner heading west outside the 371.
I will upload some nice bloody pics shortly...must go eat fresh tail now...

Love the new ride. A Yamaha 225 4stroke powers it...gets 3mpg at 24 mph...and just a hair under that at 29mph...sips it trolling...and full throttle is flat out scary...tops out at 43+ mph...
Yeah the dodos give me wood too...bastards wouldn't touch us this time though. Needed Fulltilt aboard to fullturd and get them really boiling....
A few pics...

Sweet boat with great fuel economy and fast? Gotta be lovin' it. I have really been admiring Wellcrafts center consoles lately.

That 2nd pic is perfect! The blood streaks running down that tail and the vivid colors looks awesome. Congrats on the Yellowtail!

Re: 7/27/07 - 9 / 302 / 371 offshore christening of the new ride

NICE SAL!!

Congrats on the new ride...sounds sick

Did you soak any cut bait on those DODO's?

Just a thought..

It's weird out west I remember how finicky they can be...

Here in NC when you see them...it's on..they will eat anything...

I had two breezers come up to the boat while bottom fishing and didn't have anything light to throw at them so I grabbed one of the trolling set-ups (a Penn 50W) with a seawitch (6" long) and a ballyhoo on it and dropped it at the stern...DODO hesitated and then ate it and...well lunch on the bbq..

Sorry for the jack, but I have had some luck cutting bait into little pieces and going light line with the same cut pieces for bait...patience

COngrats again...
