| 1.5 day on the El Capitan 7/16/07
We got back this morning from our Rusty Hook charter on the El Capitan out of Point Loma Sportfishing. Not the greatest fishing, but not out of lack of fish out there. The fish were very reluctant to stay with the boat. Even with the anchovies we were chumming. We had a good mix of hook bait size anchovies and sardines. Weather was not bad, 10 kts with a 3 ft chop. We were out as far as 65 miles and as close as 35 miles. We had a few jig stops in the early AM, but by 9:00 AM we only had some kelps and meter marks to work with. Best stop of the day was around 7:00 PM where we got the fish to stay up long enough for myself to land 2 bait fish. Best color on the troll was Black/Purple in any 4" size feather. I tried Mex flag, pink/white, cedar plug and a Yozuri Hydro Mag for nothing. Black/purple was what they wanted. One exotic highlight for the day was a double hookup on striped marlin on sardines. It was cool to have my fish jump several times about 20 yds off the starboard bow before making it's run. I just buttoned the drag to break it off. The other marlin almost spooled the guy before he intentionally broke it off. Jackpot fish was landed by John Medina of San Pedro for his 30+# albacore. We finished the day with 31 albacore for 18 passengers. Just about everyone had their chances, but lost their fish due to a number of circumstaces. Many thanks to Captain Alan Fay, Julie, Brad, Mike, and Diane for their usual great service.
Good fishing,
