7/13 Got a few at the 43

Short version:

I got a ride on JeffM's 22' Kencraft. Thanks again Jeff. Went to the 182 for nothing. The seas were not too good, but fishable. We didn't stay too long at the 182 and moved to the 43. There we caught two fat longfins about two miles south of the high spot. Didn't see a kelp all day.

Longer version:

I had heard all the reports about the great fishing earlier in the week and really got an itch to get on a boat. Got an invite from JeffM and met him at his home at 4am. I got there at 3:50 and he and his son Zach had everything ready to go. So we load up my gear quickly I lock the back of the truck and we head for Mission Bay. More on this part later.

We get to the launch area and there are a lot of boats ready to launch and a lot of trailers parked. Jeff gets the boat in the water, waits to load us, then we are off to get bait. The bait line is not bad when we get there but as we are leaving there must be 12 or 15 boats in line. The bait is fine, blah blah blah. Turns out we really didn’t need any.

The plan was to head to the 182 and if that wasn’t happening – move to the 43. As we left MB the seas were not good. It was going to be a rough day. We bounce our way out to the 182 and there are quite a few boats, all looking, nobody stopped. No one is reporting any fish. We head to the 43. We hear some reports of a few fish being caught. As we get there we see several boats in a small area and they seem to be stopped, hmmmm. This happens several times during the day. We are fishing an area that is about 1-5 miles south of the high spot. About 2 miles south of the spot we get a knock down on a purple and back jet head that is on the ourigger, back aways. I’m on that fish when Zach gets bit on bait, but his fish doesn’t stick. The fish I’m on (looks big) is at the boat, makes a circle and right when it’s turning parallel to the boat for the gaf ……. comes off. Ouch, 0 for 2 on that stop. Looked like we were going home with nothing. Well about an hour or two later, about one mile south of the high spot, we got a double on a pink jethead and a Mexican flag (I think) jethead close in to the boat. We get both of those fish. The gaf technique was, shall we say, “interesting”. Jeff can comment about it, if he wants. The fish seemed to be around 25lb each.

We felt good to get rid of the skunk. Seems like most people didn’t get any today. If we would have started at the 43, I could see getting 6 or 8 fish. Some on the radio sounded like they did, but it was the radio so who knows. It was getting late, the seas had laid down some, so it was time to start heading back. Jeff thought it would be smart to head south of the 182 (226 area) and then head north to see if there sere any fish there. We tried that for about 30 or 40 minutes with no luck and headed back to MB. As we got there we noticed few boats at the launch ramp, the lot had cleared out. Those who were there didn’t look happy. We felt even better about our two fish. Thanks Jeff for a great trip !

Side note: We get back to Jeff’s house and his neighbor comes over and says that I left both of my doors on my truck open with cab lights on. He was backing out of his driveway at 4:15 and he sees it. He’s an ex-marine mp (I think) and thought something really bad was up. So he goes back in his house and tells his wife to lock the door, gets his gun and goes to ‘investigate”. He sees nothing is up so he kindly closed up my truck. Good thing I locked the back. I was lucky - we left Jeff’s at 4 AM he comes out at 4:15 AM. My truck is only open 15 minutes. It’s my lucky day.

Thanks for the report. Plan on heading that way tomorrow. I think the 182 will be a zoo!

Glad you guys got em. The 43 was out of our range given the conditions. Boy, it was NASTY there for a while. We had our asses handed to us trolling the 182/181 ridge.

Thanks, dude. You're a good boat Ho', as they are referred to here. Hope you're enjoying the spoils as I am.

It was a long, tough ride for only 2 fish and I'm happy to have the 2. Hope the bellies were good. Thanks for the coldies, you saved the afternoon.

This was my first shot at an "internet fishing connection" and I would do it again.
