San Diego Marlin Clubs Spring Shootout

Fished the San Diego Marlin Clubs annual Spring Shootout. Made the Coranado Islands around 7 am with a nice scoop of dines from E bros. Chased the yellows with everyone for a couple of hours then settled into a halibut drift (side jackpot)Nailed a 44.6 #er 15# fluro carbon leader with 20# main line. Got one short after that. Tryed for another couple hours for nada, so moved on again in search of tails. Hit the middle grounds my partner Chris hooks a nice one 23.5 #. We both wound up winning our categorys in the tournament. Not without a scare for me as another club member through down a 41# Hali. Great day. I would try the middle grounds on Sunday 5/20 it was starting to get reel interesting late today. Thanks to Captain Don W. and his son Jack on the good boat Wron-Sea for a great day. There will probably be some pics soon on the clubs web site. I have 35mm will post asap. It was the largest Hali I have ever seen in person!

Great job on the huge Halibut. We also fished the tourney and had a great time. Can you imagine weighing a 41 pound halibut and getting second? We lost a really large yellowtail but thats why the call it fishing I guess. We ended up going 4 for 7 on the yellows and the largest was 14.8. We also caught a bunch of barries and maybe 5 or so giant squid. These were my first and hopfully last squid. The fight like a bag of potato's.

Great job Bill. That flatty must have looked HUGE at the gaff.

Biggest I ever got was 36# and I was sure my buddy was going to muff the gaff shot. I wasn't in a tounament either. You must have been nervous as hell when you saw it. Congrats on winning. And yeah, it must have sucked BIG time to pull in a 41# and loose.
