| 182/43 dodos and marlin
Anyway with all of the Yellow Fin Tuna showing up around San Diego Offshore, I decided to give them a try since we could not find anyone to go with us on Friday. I try calling Robert but he lost his phone and was not able to reach him, so I ended up going with my wife and an old fishing buddy, he is going to sign up here, so please be nice to him
Anyway, we leave the house at 2:30 AM, and off to Mission Bay. We arrive and launch at 4:30, try to make macks to no avail and did not want to miss the morning bite so we left with a very nice scoope of sardines.
Hook up on a marlin while trolling a macks for dodos, me and kevin fight this beast for 4 hours and decided it was not worth our time, we figured we would have to fight it for at least another hour until it was ready to subdue. If we had a leader on him we could just hand line his ass to the boat, but with 25 lbs test you just could not bring him in to the boat. We then get the fish to about 5 feet from the boat, tighten the drag and pop the hook off it. In my book I called this a sucessfull release. He was at least 175lbs, this thing was huge and we were scared to gaff it with my crappy gaff, it could injured one of us at least.
After that we went searching for Yellow Fin Tuna but found big dodos instead, we boated 5 dodos smallest being 18lbs, biggest I have seen yet, and decided to call it quits since it was pretty late. fighting marlin on light gear takes forever next time I will just tighten the drag and let it go.
I will be targeting Marlin in the next month and will boat one for sure when hook with the right gear and safety equipment...
