First time post: Sorry for it being next day. My son Ben (Dododoodoo) posted last night while I was cleaning up and undoubtedly did a better job.
Steve with his two sons and I with my two sons cleared the slip at 0600 and, after a long wait at EB, cleared the point with a healthy scoop of dines at 0645. Plan was to buddy up with Freejack and Sweetspot and converge on an area around 10/40. First couple of small paddys yielded nothing. We then found a car-sized paddy right on the numbers, tossed bait and it was game on. I boated an 8lb Yellowtail which was quickly followed by my son Ben's 10lb dodo. I called in Freejack and Sweetspot and they quickly joined in on the fun. The action was steady and we farmed more than we landed. The bite was shut down by a jackass six-pack woh followed my two buddies in and insisted on backing down right on top of the paddy.
Picked up and moved on, heading SW toward the 390. We could see a seiner on the horizon and watched its chopper lift off and head in the same general direction we were going. The chopper started to circle so we made a slight course change to investigate. We spotted porpoises with birds working them and frantically rigged two trollers with cedar plugs. We saw a nice paddy on our way to the porpoise and made a note to try and return. We got into the pod and birds, the port troller went off and my son Zach hauled in his (and the boat's) first Yellow Fin Tuna.
I called in Freejack as we continued to work the porpoise to no avail. Freejack stopped short of us and asked, "Hey, did you guys see this paddy? It's loaded with dodos."
We headed over to join him and boated two more hens. This was one of those frustrating paddies where you can see lots of fish and watch them snub your bait. It took patience, and slow-trolling dines seemed to work best.
Freejack pulled up and moved on. I decided it was time to jump in with the speargun. I hit the water and was stunned at the number of dodos and Yellowtail under and aroubd this paddy. I didn't even know there were Yellowtail there until I jumped in!
I'm still pretty new with this gun. I missed my first two shots at yellows and a third at a dodo. My fourth shot was dead on a 15lb Yellowtail (digital scale). It was work dragging that fish back to the boat: I'll need to get a reel or float for my gun before I shoot anything bigger in the future!
All in all a great day on the water. Final count:
2 Yellowtail to 15lb
4 Dodo to 15lb
1 15lb Yellowtail
They're still out there!
