Cool ass day on the water, only caught 3 Yellowtail but saw some things I have NEVER seen before!
Motored down approx 60 miles south by southwest, lotsa seiners barely any kelp whatsoever. Had my Canadian business partner with me, Cameron, who wanted to catch his first ocean fish, so the pressure is on. first stop is on a pathetic little piece of kelp, I fly line a dine rigged with Floro and hand him the rod--few seconds later Bendo! He shoulders in his first Yellowtail approx 10 lbs., slow picking fish--we drifted 3 more times for 2 more fish. Eric pics up his first Yellowtail as well, funny story he is pumping and pumping and getting worked! get the fish closer and he is pulling it in sideways....tail wrapped?---Nope a 4' Mako has his teeth dug into its side turning it and doesn't want to let go--he's along for the entire ride. Eric manages to drag both to the boat and bring in 3/4 of a fish (see pic). Anyway we are slow trolling when we see a huge bait-ball boiling everywhere, bonita crashing from below, dozens of birds from above, then we see a HUGE whale shark that was making pass after pass--annihilating this micro bait. On one pass he came out of the water, rolled over on his side, and body slammed the whole boil! Fuckin entertaining to watch we were all slack-jawed! Hours of trolling later we roll up on the biggest pod of dolphins I have ever seen--as far as the eye could see, our captain says he thought it was a 2-3 thousand sized pod (see video). We make one more desperate attempt on a dry little scrap of lettuce for nada--but while we are on this stop--standing on the swim step--a whale spouts reallllly close to the boat. Closer look and the captain says blue whale, looks biggggggg! Then he turns and comes right at the boat, I try to tape as best I can, he flukes and dives right under the swim step--maybe 2-4 feet under the boat (in my shitty video you can see his body is light blue) he comes up on the other side. He was longer than my boat by a little bit, and my boat goes 53'. When he comes up off of our bow he is joined by another, got some bitchin pics of him on our Furuno Sonar (wonder if he liked the noise the searchlight sonar emits?) It was some kinda rush being that close to that amazing of a creature. Awesome day on the water, I love the ocean!!!
--I have 2 more videos I am trying to upload but they are too big, anyone know how to do that or resize them?
