225 Miles of trolling for albacore

Went out on a friend's big Bertram Wide Open out of Marina Coral Friday afternoon around 5:00 p.m. and went out to 117.40 just a few miles below the 31 line. Gordo's had no bait, they said the seals ate them all by chewing through their nets. Mike's seiner Jacqueline is in the yard. So we went with the mackerel I had stored in our receiver in the slip. We trolled all over Vanian's numbers until we were over 80 miles out in calm seas. Never saw any other boats where we were. Never saw a paddy, we trolled all over a few whales for nada and made the decision around noon to troll in and finally found a paddy as the water warmed to 65 degrees (no chum) and I boated two yellows off of it from the mackerel. One weighed 8.6 pounds and the other 5.12 on the digital. Nothing off of a few iron casts. When we found the Dominator at 30.53/117.15 a reel went off and a 10.6 pound bonito ate a 7Strand Jet Head in Carrot Top color and I reeled that one up for sashimi and flash grilled with sesame seeds and sauce. Gail reeled up a 5# bonito, Juan Lu a 5.01 and Tom McInally a 5 pounder in the dark of dusk. It was a long run home as the boat was run at 7 knots to conserve fuel and we arrived in the slip at 0430 Sunday morning. Summary: There ain't no fricking albacore, it was a desert the further west we went. If you caught an albacore anywhere close to San Diego or Ensenada you are one lucky mother fucker. I heard one boat at Marina Coral brought back 5 albacore and haven't a clue where they went. Jerr A Mar ? Maybe on Vanian's. I suggest Somoa.

A very good effort, I thought after the great catches on the Legend things would break loose. Oh well if no one goes exploring how would we know where not to go.

Re: 225 Miles of trolling for albacore

We found 1 albacore at 31 05 188 55 on Sat.
And alot of beautiful water!

They're coming soon, unless of coarse this warm water scares them away.
Could be an epic Opah season.

With the price of gas, the non-reports are as important as the fish reoprts.
