After debating with myself the past couple of days as to whether or not to turn in the head of the 59lber I caught this weekend or get my trophy stones I called Tim at Hubbs this afternoon. Very nice guy. I explained the situation with him and here is a copy of the note I sent in with the head,
5-8-06
Tim,
Thank you for taking my phone call today. As we spoke about, if the fish is not tagged I would really love to get the stones back as this is my first legal WSB. If indeed it turns out the fish is tagged well then a couple of other stones would be great. If one of the stones could tell how old the fish is and help the research I would love to have that info and maybe only get one stone back. Your call.
The fish was caught off of Monarch Beach in Dana Point on 5-6-06 at about 7 am in about 55' of water. The water temp was about 61.5. She hit an anchovy on the bottom. She had more fin bait in her belly and she was also full of roe. She bottomed out my 55lb scale but i think a good estimate is 58-59lbs.
My Contact info is:
Thanks,
Mike
Hard to possibly give up a once in a lifetime trophy but after debating it with myself and talking to Tim I felt it was the right thing to do. I can't expect anyone else to do it if I am not willing to do it myself.
On another note Tim was up in Santa Barbara today and he had 6 tag recoveries. It is working!!

I called the guys at the hatchery and asked if the head needed to otoliths in it. They said it didn't so if you know how to get the stones out from the underside of the fish you can still give them the head.

I had about a 3" WSB swim into me the other day while I was body surfing. I grabbed it and wouldnt figure out what it was. It was red with black stripes then looked at the shape and fins and sure enough it was a baby WSB. I took it into deeper water and let it go. Hopefully by saving this one I will get to kill a nice 70#er gunz :bablefish

All right guys,
Here is an update on the tag recoveries for this year. I also included the first five at the beginning of the season. We had 6 tag recoveries this week alone. Check out the first note of interest. We recovered 3 fish this season from the same Marina del Rey 02’ release at all different locations.

Notes of Interests:
Fish #6, #13 and #23 came from the same release in Marina Del Rey. Fish #6 was landed off of Catalina Isl., fish #13 off of Ventura, and fish #23 off of Santa Cruz Isl. All three were landed 2.5 months apart.
Fish #17 was the third recapture from a Santa Barbara release in 1995. The other two were landed off of Catalina Island in 04’ and the Cortez Banks in 05’.
Fish #15 is the oldest fish to date.
OREHP has recaptured 71 legal-sized WSB to date.

The question do you get anything for the head????
Yes, you get to know you are helping the program. But you also get entered in a $500 Gift Card- drawing 2 times a year. Not sure on all the details and can't find it on the site. But when I turned in the head I had they had me fill out a form and told me that they just had the first drawing in July. They are great people there, gave me the tour and even though the fish I caught was not tagged they said that they get DNA and other info from all of them. Mine was from a 60# in Baja and when they saw it, they said not one of ours... Est. that the fish was 30 years old.
So if you get a legal fish, call them up or take it to one of the drop off spots. It is worth it...
