Wide open albies 08/09

Took the Maverick to the tuna grounds 08/09 found the fleet at 80 miles from the point. The number of boats there was amazing, but it did not hinder the bite at all. We spotted numerous spots of fish and slid in with our dines and nailed them. The best area we fished was at 31 12 117 24, at this area we spotted a 1/2 acre foamer that was just slaughtering a large bait ball (see pics). The most interesting part of the trip was the ride home on Sunday, we barely missed a whale while navigating in the fog below descanso bay. I spotted the whale off my bow about 75 yards in front of me, I made a turn to the port to avoid it, about 15 seconds later the whale was directly in front of me about 5 yards off my bow again, I made a hard turn to port and the whale was 2 feet off my starboard beam, i could have touched it. A close miss but we made it without hitting it, we spotted 3 other whales in the area which made me quite nervous.

Fishing with coffee grinders

Ben was on that fish for at least a 1/2 hour before he finally brought it to gaff. It was a nice healthy 30 plus pounder!. I was using 15 pound on a bass rod and caught two that way.

Awesome job on the albies (& photos too) ! Did you trailer to the Corel or boat down? I want to do that trip real soon, just don’t want to trailer down. I think my 26’ Striper which holds 134 gals (2 mpg) should give me the range…

Best way to fish the Coral is boating down

I carry 105 gallons and burn about 1.5 to 1.75 mpg, i like to boat down to the fishing grounds then make my way to the Coral. This last trip i ran 80 miles from the point and of course trolled for a few hours, then headed to the Coral which was 55 miles from where i ended the day. I was on or below a 1/4 tank when i arrived at the Coral. The distance from the Coral to the point is 55 miles, which takes 2 - 3 hours depending on the conditions. It is nice not having to stop at the tolls, get mex auto and boat ins and then wait at the border.
