Got the call to head out on Zoomees and CK's boat the Blackjack. We left the dock with Zoomees, CK, Brock and Herman. We left San Pedro around 5-6PM on Saturday. Got finbait and squid and headed to Avalon.

Our intrepid captain running the boat with Herman watching...........

We anchored up outside the harbor as all the cans were filled. Got the shoreboat to take us in and the festivities started. I don't remember a thing that happened on land, at least thats our story and I'm sticking to it. Lets just say that I drank too much patron and beer. We got back to the boat and headed around to the backside. We anchored up around Silver Canyon I think. I was woken up at 5AM by Zoomees and I took over anchor watch. We had a squid on a dropper loop and a sardine on a dropper loop over the edge. I tried flylining for a while but wasn't getting bit. I finally let one bait swim out about 70 yds, I got tired so I put the rod in the rodholder. I walked off, grabbed something to eat, had some water and a smoke and came back to check the lines. My flylined bait had a ton of slack in it so I started to wind it back up. Huh, feels kind of heavy. Huh, it's now taking lots of line............ Fought the fish on 20lb for about 15 minutes until I finally got him to color. A nice 25lb Yellowtail! My first Yellowtail caught at Catalina. It was a nice to finally get one close to home and not on a boat way out.

We stuck it out for a while waiting for another but nothing happened. We decided to head offshore and paddy hop and look for Marlin. We found a couple of paddies but they were dry. Headed around the frontside and checked the spots on the way up the island. A couple of dive boats in spots we wanted to stop on so we kept going. Stopped for a couple of drifts but the wind was wrong so we hit the isthmus for a quick burger and beer and then headed out to the high spot. Anchored up and threw some bait. Herman started nailing the calicos. Next thing I hear is a big splash! I look over and there is Dan wearing my mask and fins and holding my speargun in the water. If I was a fish there was probably no safer place than right next to Dan with that speargun. After finally getting him to see that spearing in 100ft of water was not in his best interest we finally got him back in the boat.

Where was a white shark when you needed one...............

Scratched a couple more calicos and a ling. None of us were sure of the legal length on a ling so I tossed it back. Got home, checked the regs and found out I tossed a legal ling back (25.5 inches, we weren't sure if it was 24 or 28"). Pulled the plug and headed back to San Pedro. Awesome day to be out there, the fishing was tough but I was with a great group of guys so the company made up for the fishing.

Moved here, seemed like a better forum since we went offshore.......

Oh yeah, we were trolling offshore with a bait-o-matic and a couple of marlin lures. I looked back at the transom and the rod the baitomatic was on wasn't bent anymore. I reeled it in thinking the knot at the swivel had busted only to find the wire clean bitten through. We never heard the drag go off or anything. Anybody have an idea if it is possible for a mako to bite throught the wire leader those things come with?
