San Clemente Island 6-1-05

Fished in a Fire Fighters Quest (Firefightersquest.com) tournament pitting LA City Fire, LA County Fire, and Glendale Fire each against each other and each of us on seperate boats out of Long Beach Sportfishing. We used the Liberty, the Victory, and the Tide Change. Each boat went to San Clemente Island and we all fished next to each other. Glendale Fire won with a 26.4# yellowtail. LA City came in second with a 26.2# yellowtail, LA County had a 23# yellowtail. According to the skippers and deckhands the fishing at Clemente has been slow but is trying to go off. It was very picky fishing for the yellows. They would pop up here and there and the boats would try to run over and park on them but we would only get a couple fish to bite with each move. Practically all fish were caught on heavy iron, blue and chrome, scrambled egg, green/yellow/white. We fished in 120 feet of water and the hot trick was to cast the iron out, let it sink all the way to the bottom, and then crank it in. Only a couple of fish on sardines. Bait was good though. We fished the north-east end of the island. A couple of ling cod and calicos for me but no yellows. Crews and skippers did great.

The fish kicked ass. Only a few yellows for each boat. Many skunked anglers!

Thanks for the report. The fishing always seems slow when this competition goes on. When did GFD get involved in this?

My first trip to SCI on the REEL TROUBLE we got into breezers near Spot 9 and we were getting snapped off left and right on quality fish- biggest on of the day had to be cut off because the Navy was kicking us out or Running us over which ever came first. When they're on there it's insane! Hopefully, soon you guys get'em on a competition day.
