Puerto Vallarta 3/13 and 3/14

I just finished two days fishing with and my good friend Eduardo Bustamante, Josh and Trev in PV.

I’m always concerned about fishing with a new guide/boat. I’ve fished world wide and had some real winners but some mega bombs. When I get on a panga my expectations are pretty low but this guy and his fishery have a reputation that is getting way up there. We chose to focus strictly on the cows for the two days we would be here which eliminated a lot of decisions as to where to fish and what tackle or bait to use. Because we only had two days here I didn’t want fool around with sails, dodos, skinnys, 100 lb tuna or any of the other miscellaneous things that swim around Puerto Vallarta in significant numbers.

Josh and Trev lived up to and passed all the hype. They are not only consummate professionals but they are interesting, knowledgeable and a lot of fun to fish with. Josh’s respect for the fishery, other fishing programs and other fishing professionals is impressive.

The fishery is good and Josh’s expectations and goals with regard to the fishery are very high, but realistic. Having fished with him and looking at his numbers for the past couple of years, I’m absolutely convinced that if your goal is a two hundred plus or a 300 plus yellowfin tuna this is definitely the highest percentage route to go. As with most good operations, Josh’s wife Catherine does a great job with helping with arrangements and any questions you might have.

Oh yes the fishing report. No cows, one 35# dog tooth snapper and a 25# yellowfin that was trying to do something with or to a 5# skipjack when he got a circle hook in the belly. Not impressive numbers but if you focus on big fish you’ve got to expect a lot of fishless days.

I was so impressed with the whole Puerto Vallarta program that this fall my boat the Patròn is going to take up residence in Puerto Vallarta for about four or five months.

The next time I fish with Josh will probably be in BC. He says the Kings in that area are not only big but they pull hard.

Hey Yale,

Nice to hear you took the time to go south. These two guys love to fish and do it well most of the time. Sorry that you guys didn't get into the "PV Cows" but that is fishing as you said. We have to talk about the next fall stuff since there might be a couple of boats headed that way for the winter. Sounds like you still kept busy pulling on something. Thanks for the report!!

Sorry to hear the big ones weren't home. We're headed down to PV on Friday for two days of cow huntin. Josh was booked, but we're with his buddy Coco on a 31 Bert. Will post results when we get back.

Don't feel too bad, we fished the 12th on a really nice boat the Yolaray at 60 miles out (el banco) and ONLY caught a buzz. Saw you guys out there fishin the ballon and heard you got the one baby Yellow Fin Tuna and we were jealous...at least you caught some dinner. Great time though and I'll be back!

I'll have my boat in PV towards the end of this year as well. Josh and Trev are fun to fish with. See you there. I'll be on a 65 Mikelson "Redneck".
