Incredible! It's interesting to see a pattern with the few fish recovered except the one that booked to Japan. I would love to see the info on how their movements related to current and temp.

Tagging studies...

Very nice to see some of the collection data coming on line.

And yes, they are tagging other types of tunas for other studies.

A few years back we caught a tagged yellow fin tuna down on the ridge. It also had both styles of tags, however the internal tag was a bit larger.

Unfortunately for our fish, it had just been tagged less than two weeks eariler in the same vicinity. Still worth a $1000 for both tags, and good to get the data back to the guys in the study.

I guess that yellowfin didn't learn much from the study, is still ate something with a hook in it!

Albacore Migration

Bill, thank you for the informative and thought provoking post. I have a friend who is a commercial fisherman that mentioned tagging data and worked with the researchers. He said that in some cases, the albacore were found to hang around off the Calif/Baja coast rather than migrate across the ocean. That one fish you caught seems to indicate that.

Where did you obtain the migration graphs you posted? I browsed around the links you provided and could not find them. I enjoy learning more about the fish in order to become a better fisherman, but also to appreciate what is being done to protect this precious resource for future generations to catch and enjoy. Thanks again for posting this information. Bill
