Headed out friday night on the legend to colonett to fish for Reds and whatever else. never really looked for yellowtail, but whatever they will be on the way north soon enough. didn't sleep well but i never do any way. my offensive lineman frame hasn't fit in a bunk since i hit my growth spurt at 15, and i managed to get my shoulders wedged between my bunk and the roof, but i am used to that.crew was real helpful with gettin people rigged up, answering questions and whatever else anyone needed, and cook steve made some great penne pasta and meat sauce on the way in. now for the fishing: conditions were far from ideal for bottom fishing after about 10 a.m. not much of a swell, but the wind kicked up bigtime and really pushed us on our drifts. had trouble staying down with 24oz sinkers, so if your goin down there bring the big weights. even with that the fishing went really well. Capt. put us on fish all day, and when a spot didn't work was very quick to move us somewhere else. Anyone who wanted to caught there limit, but not as many reds on the boat as i thought would be after reading the other reports. myself ended up with 5 nice ones, but i don't think anyone else got more than 2, and other than the size of the reds, not much different than fishing the islands. No complaints though, cuz personally all i wanted was reds and i killed'um good.
Here's my five, keep in mind that i am 6'3" and weigh 310lbs, for size referance:
one thing about reds that i have had success with is that i fish with my hooks about 6-8 inches higher than i would for regular bottom fish. They seem to stay further off the bottom than other rockfish, and i always end up getting them with my top hook a good 4 1/2-5 feet off the bottom, and consistently catch them on the top hook. seems to work for me, try it out if you have difficulty hangin reds even when seeing others take them out.
Ended up with a nice limit of reds, starrys, and a decent bocaccio, and even hung a humboldt squid at the end of the day. Some korean guys on board got some to and ended up eating it raw, not for me. but an excellent trip i would recommend to anyone looking to kill some tasty fish for the grill.
Rest of the pics:
Stupid humboldt
got him up and he ate somebodies green spotted
my whole stringer
just the reds
the sun sets on an ocean warrior
Beautiful ending to an awesome trip
