No sardines

Sorry if Im posting in the wrong forum. I went on the freedom for 1 1/2 day, fishing on sunday 9/27/08. The weather was nice but they had no sardines. I felt that we could of cought more tuna/yellowtails if we had some sardines. I did not have light line for the anchovies, so this kept them near the boat. I was pretty disappointed. Anyway, does this happens at times or could have this been corrected. We had to wake up at 2-3 am to catch mackeral and squid. I did not come back empty handed though, I caught some sheep h, white fish and rock cod. AAAAAH! I feel a little better, had to let this out.

Did you ask the crew if they had lighter line?

This time of year is the transition for both fish and bait..the cooler water will probably lead to more anchovies and less sardines and frankly the chove can be a better bait if you learn to fish with it and are prepared with the right tackle..side by side there are a lot of us that would prefer to fish a good hot chovie than a sardine this time of year..Until a few years ago we didn't have the sardines in any quantity and everything was anchovy...practice in the back yard with a short piece of 1/4 inch dowel or a short piece of a wooden pencil tied to your line...practice casting overhead as if you were on a boat...better on a breezy day..you will be surprised how good you get with some practice...take the heavier gear for the times there might be sardines but also take the lighter stuff and enjoy fishing the chove. But then I'm old and what the hell do I know?

You know a ton Bob And the thing that really stood out from what you said and what few people do is practice casting before they get on the boat. Whether it's an anchovy or a surface iron, practice.

I can't count how many guys get boats and have no idea how to cast their Accurates and Avets.

You can't buy fishing talent, it has to be learned. Why not make the most of your trip.......

1 1/2 trip and no dines? What's up with that. Sounds like the captions plan "A" fell through (buying squid from a light boat) and plan "B" (making macs) did not work well also. You did plan "C" fished with the chum. Freedom?

Adapt adapt adapt!! You don't always get the weather you want, you don't always get the fish you want, etc, etc.... Mother nature can sure be a bitch sometimes!! The first sixteen day trip I went on all we had was anchovies, that's all we used to ever have!! I know some guys in the bait business and they don't always catch what they want to catch either.
