i'd rather fish with anchovies, than sardines. growing up, anchovies were what had to fish with. after the heavy el ninos the anchovies were replaced by nature with sadines. the bigger baits are easier to cast with heavier line. i have spectra on most of my reels. i can change top shots in a few minutes and go to lighter, or heavier test. were there tuna and yellows caught on the boat?

Extra Spools

That was the nice thing about the older but popular Daiwa 30h's. You could change out a spool in 30 seconds with the thumb screws. Usually I will bring the 30h with 25lb test and have 2 additional 30h spools (15 & 20 lbs) in my dry bag. As has been said, dines are a luxury at certain times of the year and not always available. You fish with what's available. Also haven't you noticed that lighter line gets hit more often on party boats. Only problem is you can farm a few more on lighter line.

I always bring my 196-8' with a G-229 Newell loaded with 15 to 20# just in case I need to toss a small or weak bait out for distance in a situation like that. That setup can toss the bait well but also handle a good fish when you do hook up.

I was on that trip as well.... there was a few sardines but not many at all. Actually the chovies were beatin up so it was kinda hard to fish the chovie when they didnt want to swim. i believe our count for the boat was 8BFT (i had 1) - 3YT (caught on the butterfly, flyline mack, cuck bait of bonita) 40 bones - sheephead/sculpin/white fish (all you wanted)..... yeah i caught my Blue Fin Tuna on Calcutta 80H w/ Avet SX 50lb spectra w/ a top shot of 20lb blackwater.

Bob, that's fantastic information. It's a hard enough fishing with the Freedom clientele as it is. Cattle boats will always have the people that grow fucking roots right into the deck and don't move for anyone, but those are usually the same dickheads that have their lines running right into the props from the other side of the boat. So, i suppose my point was yeah, practice, practice, practice.
