New Moon Mako Shark & Swordfish Tournament
Thanks to all the sponsors and teams that participated. The 80 inch/ 200 lb. minimum this year proved very effective, as many juvenille fish were seen by anglers in the areas fished. Hopefully those fish can participate in next years "catch and release division". No Swordfish were caught by tournament participants, but there was radio talk of one caught in the area. As for Mako's, two qualifying fish were brought to the scales in Marina Del Rey. "Team Booyaa" hooked up at 11:30 Saturday Morning and brought in the winning fish weighing 748 pounds. The second place fish caught by "Team Motivator" was brought to the boat at 2:00 pm on Saturday, and when brought to the scales, weighed in at 250 pounds. Congrats Teams Booyaa, and Motivator. NOAA Fisheries Services Researchers were also on hand at the weigh-in to collect measurements and tissue samples from the fish caught to aid in research. They say it is rare that they are able to collect data from fish this size, and the information they are able to collect is very valuable. Also we were able to donate approxomately 300 pounds of fresh shark meat to local shelters to help feed individuals, and families less fortunate.
Next year we will be running the tournament out of ports from San Diego up to the Channel Islands. All on the same day, so pick your port! Watch for details at your local tackle shops or on line.
Thanks to all those that participated, and hope to see you all next year.
