Orion 7-29

This was my first time fishing the Oriion and we all had a blast. We went with a load of 13. There were some really good sticks with a few newbs to round out our group. I guess Bryan has just taken over the boat in the last few weeks. His enthusiasm for catching fish shines through and is mirrored by his crew. I cannot say enough good things about the captain and crew. They are hard working and dedicated to making sure everyone had a good time and caught fish. We started off at about 75 miles and within an hour of daylight we were on our first paddy of the day. This one turned out to be a great stop with about 30 tails put in the sacks. The crew had a few tangles to work through on that stop and I don't believe we lost a fish to a tangle on that stop. The rest of the morning was spent with paddy's producing between 5 to 10 tails each. The tails all averaged around 15 to 20 lbs. Some bigger and a few rats. No real slobs were put in the boat. The last stop of the afternoon was stupid. We all had our limits by then and this paddy was stuffed with tails and Dodo's. We were all releasing 20lb tails one after the other trying to get the Dodos to chew. A few Dodo's came over the rail but the yellows seemed to be the more aggressive.

As you may know, the Orion is not the fasted, biggest or shiniest boat in the fleet. But, she was very clean, comfortable and a blast to fish on. Bryan stayed up top glassing for paddy's from sun up until after dark. We already had limits of tails and he wanted to fill out our limits with some Dodo's. He is dedicated to filling the sacks. I really liked fishing lower to the water than on most boats. I think it made for easier gaffing of the fish in the head and not the meat. I only saw a couple of meat shots the whole day. I can't thank Bryan enough for putting us on the fish and providing a fun atmosphere to fish in. I wish you well on the Orion Bryan. I am sure you are going to do well.

No camera for me so no pics. I am supposed to get some by email soon.

Kudos to Bryan...I've know him for some time now..he ran the Sea Watch when I was able to come along on some of the Fishing 101 youngster trips and also he and his crew were the ones that helped make our Marine's charter this spring so memorable...I've fished the Orion in the past when Tom owned it and it's a great boat..Picture is one of the nice albies on an "Orion trip" ..you can see from the picture that it's a smaller boat but rides great and really great to fish..they don't book a large load so it's almost like fishing a big "6 pack"...I think the combination of Bryan and the Orion is one that will do really well..there is another smaller boat in one of the other landing's fleet that is a boat that anglers fight to get on (not right to mention it here as we are talking about the Orion) and I'd expect to see this one work out the same way..

Hey Mike! Thanks for the post and the nice words. Haven't had a chance to sit at my computer in a while, sorry about bringing back the old post but I just wanted to say Mike is a great guy, and a really good fisherman! That charter was one of those trips where everything came together, the weather, the fishing and the people... The type that has us sitting around going "remember that one trip" on our not-so-good days.
