8-14 Loooooong day
The plan was to put my oldest friend in the world & his 17 year old son, On some tuna. I did my research, and decided to go long and try for a couple of toad albies and the come back up the inside looking for kelps. Welaunched at 9pm got bait ( the worst I've got all year) and cleared the point at 9:45 on a course for the 295, actuall #s 3125 / 11727 took it slow and easy as my crew was a little concerned about having no headlights on the boat LMFA off by this point. We get to the numbers and we are the only boat there, With the exception of Capt. Curt on HANA who was starting in the same general area. Any way I have had 0 sleep so I grap an hour, maybe, I'm even wooried about my crew keeping watch without falling asleep. I pop back up at the first sign of light and the whole fleet is there, Every sporty on the west coast. We start trolling, I put the Saltydawg on auto and put out my spread, jump back take the helm and start boxing the area, I turn to tell my crew what to expect and give a brief lesson, and theyre both back in the rack keep trolling 30 minutes later double jigstrike I throw chum, start clearing lines, hand one to the kid, and the other comes off right as his dad picks it up. I get one going on bait and hand it off to my buddy as I see the kid is having problems, and he immediately loses bait fish, The kid gets this huge albie to the boat, and some how freespools the reel and looses it. I put the spread back out, they both go back to sleep I am metering tons of fish but nothing for over an hour, finall a reel goes off, I mean really screaming, Crew still asleep, Hell with em,I grab the stick & start cranking, it pulls a little then swims straight at the boat, reel like crazy (Penn single speed) I get it to the boat Its a 12lb Blue fin. Well by now the albie bite has slowed its 10am I go for warmer water (its 65.8 here) and some kelps, by now my crew is wide awake. We find 2 dry kelps on the 238 water is still only 66.2 and stayed that temp for 20 miles no more paddies. The water temp finally came up to 70 but no more kelps. So thats it 225 miles and 1 Bluefin. Back at the ramp (what a zoo) at 4pm home at 5pm told crew to come back tomorrow to help clean boat I was really beat, Sat down real quick to check out the Padre score, Thats it, Its now 5:30 am wow I was tired. Hey guys the fish are there if ya go the distance and have good crew. makes me appreciate my HO's
Kill em again next week
