Fat Albert and the Albertitos with ELVIS

Sunday started with high hopes of running into a hot albie bite at the Guide out of Santa Cruz. We loaded up with bait at 4 am and had the jigs in about 7 am in 63 degree water-we stopped 15 miles or so short as we were in clean, clear, warm water. We had been dragging for maybe 5 minutes before our first jig strike. Fat albert NO but little albertitos were rampant most of the morning at 36 59 123 08. We would get single jig strikes and then a handful on bait. Even hooked one on the dangling cedar plug next to the boat after a bait stop. We ended up catching 24 within a mile of the previous numbers and got 2 more while cleaning fish on the way in-the last as close as 49 miles. Fish ranged from 5 to 22 lbs with the vast majority 10-12. We had dumped our bait and started running in and came across a big mat of kelp roots complete with birds. Being out of bait we drug a feather by the "patty" and Dad hooked up with the exotic (for these parts)-see pic. Another 5 miles in or so we sighted Elvis and hustled to get the only bait we had on board-tuna belly. After jumping 3 spectacular times it was nowhere to be found. All in all a great day on the water. Sorry about the giant pictures....don't know how to do it any different!
