And in the nick of time.
After 3 slow years out of Santa Cruz and numeruos MPA closures looming, I brought the Taylor-Gene to Brookings, Oregon.
We ran a check out run today, just a little offshore (around 22-30 miles) for a bit of tuna action. We found a good break inside but the water was off color and a little cool, kept running for another 10 miles and found good temp 60.99 degrees but void of life and still off color. We trolled a few high spots along the 500 fathom curve
(41.56 124.52 most action) had a double about each hour, with no fish on the slide or on iron. We boated 8 albacore from 12 to 18 pounds and 2 short strikes. The fish seems hungry with the shorter lines going first then a delayed second fish 15-20 seconds later. Would have been nice to have live bait but really didn't meter any extra fish or reason too on the stops.
Boat ran good and it was good to see an Albacore circling on the line again!
We will be running scheduled trips for Tuna, both kinds of Salmon and Halibut in about a week.
We will post regularly after each trip.
