Was out fishing sablefish with my buddy for a couple bucks and we saw a shark cruise the boat. Wasn't a blue and hadn't seen it before. Put a salmon belly 15ft down with the clicker on for shits and giggles. Few mins later the clicker screams, I set hook and shark went ape shit for a minute and broke off (surprise). Hour later see another and same thing. Put salmon belly 15ft down and clicker screamed again. Set hook saw a big shark roll and then gone. Both with mono. Too cold for mako, but a possibility. Maybe salmon shark, but all I know was that it wasn't over.
Next day I set up 8 ft of single strand wire, 12/0 mustad, 80lb braid, 20 foot top shot of 60 lb Izor on a Saltiga 50. Sad thing was, and I knew it, was that the reel was already on a Calstar 870. Was running late and went for it anyway.
Got back out to black cod grounds and set our lines for sablefish. I put out a piece of salmon 15 ft below the boat. 30 mins later the clicker went off. I fed a little line and swung. Thinking about kicking a blue sharks ass I was amused, until the shark turned. I almost shit a brick! For a split second I thought it was whitey and then realized that it was a big salmon shark.
I then realized what I had got myself into. No belt or harness, just stupidity. I gave it all I had and thought I was doing okay. I had to use the rail eventually and in an 18 ft Klamath it's not comfortable. I was hurting and the Calstar was aching, creaking, and making unpleasant noises. Everything was going okay about a 1/2 hour into it until she was straight up and down and it was 2 feet give and take. I knew something was up and I buttoned down and got her up, tail first. She was wrapped.
I wanted some pics and my buddy held and unwrapped her tail to get her head up. Only problem was that once she was unwrapped she glided off. She had chewed 300 lb wire while tail wrapped. 1 minute later she was on the surface 50 feet away swimming right at the boat. She swam by the boat giving us the

.
She was honestly every bit of 7 foot. Not good with weights on these things, but she was big and round.
The pictures suck as she wanted to stay on the glare side of the boat, but they're something.
At one pont she wa straight under the boat and coming up. Had most of the leader out of the water and didn't see her. We both looked over the rail to see this. She was staring right at us.Tail down, face up smiling with the scariest look I've ever seen.
Here's me on my knees like a little bitch.
Here she is coming up tail first.
Pics suck, but whatever I guess they're something. Gonna go out again a bit more prepared and maybe put some on the bbq next time. Good times though.
