crabs... not many

had only 6 pots out there.... brought a bunch in a while ago.

Headed out around 12:30 ish (Got to the harbor WAAAY before that but spent more then 2 hours talking with people lol.)

The wind had just picked up and it was 15 ish of NW. Head out to where we had gear in 25 fathoms. At around 23 fathoms all hell broke loose. There was logs/branches/trees Every 30-50 ft. It was a pain in the ass to dodge them and stay on course.... because you would dodge one, get back on course, dodge 2 more... rediculas. be careful out there, there was some BIG ones. I am proud to say I didn't one all day. At times I was having to go inbetween 2 logs with only feet on each side.

We decided on the way out that I was gona run the boat and dad was gona run the gear, Pulled up and I started looking. 15 minutes into the search I found a pot, roughly a little over an 1/8th of a mile northwest of where it should have been. Kept poking around and around an hour after that I changed my search tactic. from back and forth to 1/8th of a mile northwest of the string and running parallel to it. Second time down the string found another pot. This one to was about an 1/8th of a mile northwest. Kept on doing it and found 1 more pot.

Total as 2 crabs and 2 shorts.

Bleached the ropes and the bouys (They were bad) and set out more gear. Moved everything around, still in 25 fathoms. Rebaited with sardines.

Got in a litle after 4. What usually takes us and hour and a half took us a long time... and we only found 3.

This is out worst year in a while for loosing gear. I think the last time we lost this much was 94-95 when we lost 6. But that was the roughest I have ever seen the ocean, ever, and it was the roughest I have been on the ocean in. We should not have left the harbor that day, and we were told we were the only ones who did.... The swells were so big and close together that when we were in the trough it got "Dark." Its up to 5 pots lost this year...

it was good to get out.

Can't remember ever bringing home just 2 crabs... I can't do it again

Met 2 smoken hot twins and the fred hall and hung out with them for a while...

It is gona be worth coming down to Long beach just to see them again. When is tha tthing?

Long Beach is Mar. 1st to 5th this year.

Out of curiousity, how much does one pot with rope and bouy go for?

Re: crabs... not many

They were chillin up on the Cortez that Harold is giving raffling off for the Rollo foundation...

I'm working on the pictures.... For some reason I can't upload pics on BD.... I can upload them into a gallery but I have to use the other puter....

I'll try and send em to some one...

How much per pot...

It depends what kind of pot... Theres cheapo square gear that runs 25 bucks a pot. thats what we lost. they don't last, and don't fish good, and leak a lot.

then theres commercial pots... Rebbar wrapped in rubber... those are from 90-140. heavier, last longer, fish better and don't leak... I did loose a couple of 135 dollar pots this year....

For line I use 3/8ths blue steel crabers lay. For a coil of 1200 feet (200 fathoms) your looking at between 70 and 100.

On my 35 fathom gear I use 50 fathoms of line. 25 fathom gear I use 35 fathoms.

Then you figure in a bouy prolly 7 bucks, line weights, a couple bucks, then theres bait jars, tags, bands, hooks, cotten, on the square gear you gotta add weight (20 LBS) and door weights.

So it can get expensive...

and then there is your time. I braid everything. On my bouys there is one braided loop, then on the end of each shot there is a braided loop, then on the square gear there is 2 more braided loops on the bridal.

And this isn't truckers rope I am braiding... Its hardened crabbers lay.

Re: crabs... not many

I was fishing the beach off Westport one year and had about 500 pots with small bottom shots and small buoys so they wouldnt walk and layed them all over the mudhole and if I got them up and down daily they were going 20-25 to the pot. We were corking each other and it was mayhem. In the middle of the day the wind came up and squalled a bit. Blew us in for a rest and then unpredicted large swells hit and over two days wiped out or stuck all of us. Shit the ones that made it were full of shit like you wouldnt believe. Youd wonder how shit like that got thru the tunnels if not just blowing panels out like little drivethrus. Alot of work for free and building gear. I used to have pics of us all in there pumping and yarding on shit. Those that have built gear will know the dog kicking that went on for months. That was when we'd get excited to get a buck a pound and go wide open. Sitting at the knotty pine drinking and fighting. Sorry about getting off thread it makes my heart pump.

Re: crabs... not many

Sleeter, Yup 5 or 6. I remember turning to my dad and saying I wanted to go in. And that is to this day the only time I have ever said that.

I drove by your house today... the brown one right before the end county road sign right?

Cleaning the ropes is since we are in such deep water and theres so much alge/bacteria in the water and the rope is out there so much that the first 6-10 fathoms are just covered in all kinds of stuff (The first few fathoms because thats where the sunlight is) and its just rugged. The bouys are to. So we took the top off a 55 gallong drum, cut it down and filled it with bleach and water. then we coiled the line into it and scrubbed a bit.

We then dropped a couple more pots in the string.
