Location: 19 miles due west of Noyo Harbor.
Water Temp/Color: 54-57 blue
Depth: 2,600
Around 17 miles west of the buoy we saw a small blue shark finning so we dropped the lures in. Its always nice to start trolling near a blue shark (makos love to eat blue sharks- maybe salmon sharks do as well?). This is the first trip we got to use the Upriggers...
Shark trolln- (center rod not being used)
There were at least 100 albatross sitting in a one square mile area, in groups of about 20. There were also tons of humpback whales breaching and jumping around. Very nice day on the water!
Might be one of my best shots ever... albatross walking on the surface preparing for flight.
Well... hooknline and I were trolling towards a finning shark- not knowing what species it was. The shark allowed us to get within 10-feet of it, and we were both positive what we saw, wonna dems samin shawks. Suddenly the day got pretty exciting. We circled this shark about 10 times before it hit the lure.
Here's a shot of a salmon shark finning on the surface- notice the nice wake.
Salmon shark entering the wake (dorsal fin causing wake).
We were circling the shark (when you do this either the shark speeds through your spread or it swims away from the boat) and it entered the spread! This is when you hold your breath, curse at the shark, pray to your master, or whatever you do to bring yourself luck. We were circling pretty fast this pass- about 7 knots. About 50-feet behind the boat, the shark suddenly changed direction and hauled butt towards a 103/8 inch Yozuri Bonita plug. ZZZZZzzzz Hooknline and I were clearing the empty rods when the rod went limp.... I grabbed the rod and started winding like crazy- but it was gone.
We ended up finding a total of 3 salmon sharks finning (and several other blues). Only 1 hookup... which was farmed. Plenty of Nicorette.
The frustration mounts.
The day will come soon....
