10/10/09 Epic day on Diabla

Manny and I have been talking about a Gualala trip together for along time. This weekend was the weekend. I've always wanted to fish up there, and I've been wanting to try ab diving also.
We left Redwood City@ 5:00 with Manny, TimP, Mitch, Kurt, and Myself. Got to Bodega @7, where John was waiting for us. Splashed Diabla, and made the 1.5 hour run up to Gualala. I brought breakfast for everyone. Bagel, and smoked salmon. Manny liked his a little too much.

The time went fast, and before you knew it, we were on the fish. The lings came on strong in the morning. Here's TimP with one.

John with another.

The quality of the cod was just amazing!

Then we ran across this stinky fucker.

But he didn't stop the action.

Kurt got a boo boo

The blacks were thick!

We got reds too. A bunch!

6 of the 10 lings we caught.

Mitch with a double. Da Kine Shit! The canary was released.

We limit on NICE cod, but we only have 6 lings. So we make a move to a spot that
Manny say's holds lings. He makes up this jackass rig with a greenling, and I'll be god damned
if he didn't hook up!

John and Manny caught 4 lings at this spot, using these rigs. Unreal!
Now it's getting late, and we still have abs to get. The water turned to glass for
our run to the ab hole.

Betty was ready.

We got to the spot, and it was time to suit up.

Manny was amazed at my girth.

So I got all suited up, and was ready for my first splash down.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.

The visability was about 15 ft. The surge wasn't bad, and there were abs everywhere!
Here's Mitch getting ready. This fucker can dive.

We were in for maybe 1/2 hour, and we all got our limits. I was the first one back.
Damn! did I need a beer!

Manny had a nice pair of ab breasts. Don't ask where the 3rd one is.

My guide, my teacher, my friend! Thanks a million Manny. I have another adiction!

We ended the day with 60 rock cod, 10 lings, an 12 abs. Just a fucking outstanding day.

Way to go! Great report. You should try spear fishing. Nothing like it.

Smoken post! How far off shore were you while fishing. Not sure if this is a secret spot or not. I fish out of a yak. I haven't seen rock fish like since the old days fishing with Rick Powers out at Corrdell Banks.

Not too far. Maybe 1/2 -3/4 of a mile off shore. The deepest we fished was 100'. It's a long run. We were 40 miles up from Bodega.

Miss diving for Abs out south of Navarro river, We had a private cove that were stacked with abs, those days are over now and now dig for Razor Clams in SW Washington, not bad tasting if cooked right. Catching Sturgeon and Silvers now on the Cowlitz river. Life is good!

Very cool report.
How deep were the abs?
Have tried a couple times up in Shelter Cove but too much surge when we went.
