Help! First timer in big sur

Hello All,

I'm a fairly new fisherman and am most likely going up to big sur this weekend. Does anyone have any tips on what to bring for a good day of fishing. Is it even open for fishing right now? Sorry for being so vague but I am honestly lost on what to bring or what bait to use. If anyone can help It would be awesome

Ivan

You can fish from shore for rockfish and perch. For rockfish use a 2/0 baitholder or octopus hook. Rig two hooks: one low, one high. Use at least a few ounces of weight to maintain contact with the bottom and plan on losing a fair amount of tackle. Some guys use tabacco pouches filled with sand as weight because you lose that much gear. In any case, tie your weight onto your main line with a lighter test line than your main line. That way when you snag up you can break the weight off and keep your hooks and/or fish. Use squid for bait and cut it into strips that have a tail...the action of the tail will get more bites than a motionless ball of bait. A longer, sturdier rod is what you want here...this isn't about finess. The lower the tide the better.

For perch you can use the same technique as above, just scale down your hook size a something like a size 6. You can also carolina rig small gulp sandworms and drag these over sandy stretches of beach. For perch at the beaches, fish an incoming tide to high tide. If you don't get bit within 5-10 minutes, move.

You'll catch different kinds of perch in rocky versus sandy areas. You're probably better off fishing the rocks....that's what sur is known for. Their are plenty of rangers down that way....find one before you fish to make sure you're not in a protected area. Familiarize yourself with how to identify a cabezon and make sure they are large enough (16") to keep.

Good luck
