#2. The are fought and landed on stand up gear too but with fish up to 1000+lbs. it is VERY serious business to be attached to such a tuna.

#3. In rod holder makes sharing the fight among the crew easy especially on a boat w/o a fighting chair.

#4. Catch of a lifetime done easiest/safest way. Fight the next one stand
up.

#5. It IS a beating and the stand up guys usually get settled against the rail in the bow and let the giant tuna tow the smaller center console boats ideally used for stand up style with huge drag pressures.

No one would argue that pure Stand Up technique isn't the most challenging way to fight and land such huge fish. But few can claim to have done so. Chair technique and in the Holder is more common and realistic for more anglers.
The comment about big bluefin not being on the west coast could be debateable. In either 98 or 99 there was A LOT of talk about a school of close to a thousand fish of 600-900lb class wrapped commercially that was spotted by planes off of the channel islands somewhere. Keep in mind that the Pacific is far far deeper than the atlantic and therefore if these fish where indeed fishable the thought of catching them would be neer impossible not having the line to stop one. Ive personally seen some splashes during bluefin bites that made me wonder just how big they get in the pacific. Theres lots we dont know thats for sure IMO of course. Two different oceans compared but bluefin inhabit most seas around the world so who knows for sure how big they get in the deeper seas.

just some food for thought or even debate

"west coast" is not New Zealand and though it certainly is the Pacific there is no documented communication between North and South Pacific stocks that I am aware of.

Largest reported West Coast Blue Fin Tuna is 237kg caught in a gillnet off of Anacapa Island in 1981.

Did commercial guys wrap bigger ones...possible and even likely in the past... Do they get to Giant size in the North Pacific or West Coast? They might if the Japanese/Tiawanese were not wrapping them all in their breeding grounds in the Philippine and South China Seas.

I think the rod and reel record in California is 325lbs or so...still looking to confirm that. Lets hope there is still a chance to break it but I will believe it when I see it.
