Is the main reason that you fight it in the holder just that the fish is so big and strong that a human body can't take a beating like that? I know for a fact that I couldn't do it. Just wondering. #1. They don't have 1000lb. Blue Fin Tuna on the West Coast anymore it seems

. Mr. Song's fish was
only ~750lbs...The only things close to this size remaining on the West Coast are Blue/Black Marlin that pound for pound are not as strong as Tuna.
#2. The
are fought and landed on stand up gear too but with fish up to 1000+lbs. it is VERY serious business to be attached to such a tuna.
#3. In rod holder makes sharing the fight among the crew easy especially on a boat w/o a fighting chair.
#4. Catch of a lifetime done easiest/safest way. Fight the next one stand
up.
#5. It IS a beating and the stand up guys usually get settled against the rail in the bow and let the giant tuna
tow the smaller center console boats ideally used for stand up style with huge drag pressures.
No one would argue that pure Stand Up technique isn't the most challenging way to fight and land such huge fish. But few can claim to have done so. Chair technique and In the Holder is more common and realistic for more anglers.
