The Bimini to Yucatan is still King when it comes to breaking strength, testing about 90% of ACTUAL line strength not the lower labeled line strength. Alot of people make the mistake of thinking their line is 100% strength when it broke above the labeled strength. Well most braid actual strength is well above the labeled strength, especially the 20lbs and under. The 50lbs and up only overtest by 20-30%.
Example: Bimini-Yucatan on 10lb Stren Super Braid: 24+ lbs (28lbs actual breaking strength on Stren Super Braid scanning various magazine IGFA test)
FG knot: 20+lbs
Slim beauty: 16+lbs
Tony Pena :16+lbs
Stren Super Braid 20lbs Gold(36lbs IGFA test):
FG knot: 30+lbs
Bimini-Yucatan: 30+lbs
TP, Slim Beauty, GT :18+ lbs
EDIT: Just tested Tufline XP 65lb braid to 80lb Ande mono to 56lb dumbell(50lb weight plus 6lbs bar and end bolt) with the FG knot. I put on a protective glass but nothing to protect my face(scary feeling). I left the 65lb Tufline Xp on the bulk spool and tie it to a section of 80lb Ande mono and attach that via improved clinch knot to dumbbell. With gloves on, I was able to lift the 56lbs weight without the knot breaking. I didn't dare to add any more weight since I don't want a short length of 80lb mono to snap and hit my face.
The FG Knot AFTER it passed the 56lbs lift test. Note the color change as they all do when put under a tremendous strain. I didn't bother to build the series of half hitch ramp for this test.
The setup:
The Tony Pena Knot, Slim beauty, GT knot are pretty much just variation of one another. The part where the braid meets the mono is the weak point.
The Bimini and mid knot are similar, the bimini wraps up and down on it's own while the mid and PR knot wraps up and down around the leader. They look like they won't hold but they do when tie right. Super glue are only for unraveling of braid tag end, not for strength. Bimini-yucatan is far easier to tie than PR and mid knot but the PR and midknot goes thru guide much easier and about the only knot suitable for casting 60lbs+ leader thru guides.
The best compromise for me is an FG knot BUT not tied like most video shown. Tie it the Sebile way. The Sebile knot IS the FG knot, just tied differently. Google it up on youtube. AFTER the knot is tighten, go ahead and add the half hitches on the braid to "ramp" up to the main knot.
At first glance, the FG knot looks weaker since the braid is criscrossing each other right away but repeated test shows that it doesn't weaken the knot. Rather it enables the braid to bite on the mono quicker than the mid knot. It rarely slips 2mm and tighten up right away. It will even work on braid and mono coated wire.
